The Agent – (Chapter: Hired to kill)

"Can we help you?" I checked for weapons. They each had a hand gun. This was going to be easy. I smiled to myself.

"I need to prepare the girl for the doctor’s visit." Apparently they believed me because they let me in without any further questions.

Pale blue eyes were staring at me. Her head was bandaged and there were scrapes on her skin. Other than that she looked fine.

"Can you pass me the jug of water nurse?" I stared at her, my hand tight on the gun. I looked at my watch. I had 23 minutes. I handed her the jug and even poured her a glass. A gesture I would never have done before. She was about to die. It was the last sip of anything she was ever going to take. I quickly turned, moved and placed a chair in front of the door preventing anyone from coming inside.

"What are you doing?" Her pale blue eyes showing fear.

I quickly took out my gun. I was expecting her to scream. I was ready for that, but I was not ready for the words that were escaping from her lips. A prayer. She was praying. I was caught off guard. I moved closer to her, pointing the gun to her head. I had to do this, I had to kill her in order to live. Her eyes finally looked calm. She was ready to die. I was standing over her, the gun brushing against the skin of her forehead.

She looked in my eyes, and I was looking in hers. A single tear was going down her cheek. I felt a sting go down my cheek. I lifted my hand to my face. I had managed to produce a tear as well. I pulled the gun away from her, letting it fall slowly down to hang limply at my side. I don’t know who was more surprised as I spoke, myself or the girl in front of me.

"We need to get you out of here. You’re not safe."

"What?" I pulled her up. "You’re not going to kill me?"

"No, but they’re going to send someone else. Just follow me, okay? I opened the window and examined the fire escape. I couldn’t believe the lack of security at this hospital. The guards placed oh-so-strategically were no use with a rusty old window and a fire escape right outside her window. Anyone could’ve come in.
