The Agent – (Chapter: Hired to kill)

I got out the window and extended my hand to her. "You must come with me."

She paused. "I should scream. The guards will come get you."

There was no time to argue with her. I checked my watch: five minutes remained.

"There is no time, please just come with me. You’re not safe."

"It was you, wasn’t it? You tried to kill me earlier?"

"YES! But I didn’t kill you now, did I? So just fucking come with me. I promise I’m not going to hurt you again."

She nodded as she began climbing out the window. She was wearing nothing but a hospital gown, and I looked on as goose bumps formed on her arms. I removed my jacket and handed it to her. "Put this on, it’ll keep you warm." I grabbed her hand and dragged her to the ladder, pulling it down and motioning for her to climb down first.

Once both of us were at the bottom, I motioned for her to walk with me. I had a car parked around the corner. She was shaky and nervous, I could tell. I was not good with human contact or talking. I had only ever spoken to Aiden, and even that was just brief conversation about targets. Nothing important or personal in the slightest.

She was watching me from the corner of her eye. I could tell she had lots of questions. I wasn’t sure if I was the right one to answer her. I knew so much less than she would want to know. We reached the car and were about to get in when we heard an explosion. I looked at my watch.

    Time was up.

We stood still, both watching the room we’d just escape from go up in flames. People started to scream around us, running closer for a better view. I turned and looked at the other side of the car, at Spencer. She was pale. I could tell she was about to pass out. I jumped over the bonnet, skidding smoothly across. My timing was perfect. She was falling. I caught her, moving a strand of hair from her face. I opened the car door and helped her in.

I got in the driver’s side, taking a moment to absorb everything that had just happened. We were on the run now. It was something I was not prepared for. I started the ignition and began to drive. Where to? I had no idea…
