    The night is too dark, too spacious, too quiet, and you’re not there to hold me.


    Apparently Paula took her silence as apathy and became further enraged. “She’s here, in a hospital, after being assaulted all because you were to selfish to look after her. Her best friend. DO YOU EVEN CARE?!”


    She was out of her chair and the the words came tumbling out of her mouth before she even had a chance to think. “OF COURSE I CARE I’M IN LOVE WITH HER!”


    Just as quickly, she felt a burning sensation on the right side of her cheek though she thought it didn’t feel nearly as bad as it should. Maybe she was numb. Maybe Paula hit like a girl. The metallic taste of blood in her mouth proved the latter guess very wrong. The next thing she registered was Paula being restrained by some man with a dark complexion and Glen looking on with clear nervousness in his eyes, he didn’t know what to do with himself and neither did Ashley.


    “Get your fuckin hands off of my mother.” Clay yelled as he ripped Paula away from the dark skinned doctor. “Stay away from her and stay away from my family. I know who you are ok? I know.”


    Shock was now written across Glen’s face as he glanced rapidly from his mother to the doctor currently taking a defensive position, “You? You’re the one?”


    ‘This is the guy? The man who Mother Superior’s fucking? Holy shit this can’t be good.’ Ashley thought to herself.


    At that moment, Arthur Carlin walked in through the sliding doors and searched for a familiar face. What he found was not what he was expecting. Ashley had never been so glad to see him in the entire span of being his biggest fan.


    She watched as he gracefully went from ‘scared shitless father’ to ‘ commanding/concerned father/husband’. He walked over to where Clay held his mother and took his estranged wife into his arms, his eyes never once leaving the doctor. “Thank you Ben. I’ve got it from here.” his usual warm and caring voice was uncharacteristically cold and it made Ashley slightly more uneasy than she already was.


    The two men shared a brief stare off, neither budging before ‘Dr. Ben’ turned on his heel and went through the double doors. Mr. Carlin returned his attentions to his family. Exchanging comforting words and offering strength that she wished she could draw from. But that wasn’t her family. She didn’t have that type of support from her parents. Instead, the only people she considered family were either doing damage control or lying unconscious on a bed in a cold sterile hospital room.
