    The night is too dark, too spacious, too quiet, and you’re not there to hold me.


    “Are you two ok?” A visibly upset Paula asked her two sons. They both nodded their heads solemnly and answered their mother’s questions.


    “You alright?” Chelsea asked the brunette cautiously.


    “As alright as I can be.” she mumbled her reply.


    Taking Ashley by the hand, Chelsea lead her to a seat where they could both just sit and rest and worry without putting anymore stress on their feet. It had been a horrendous night and as soon as she sat down, an ache made itself known in every muscle of her body, especially her heart. She buried her face in her hands and let the feeling that she had been holding back for too long wash over her: guilt. ‘How could I let this happen? I should’ve gotten the drinks. I should’ve walked with her to the bathroom. If I weren’t so fucking selfish and looking for a fight this never would’ve happened.’


    “Ashley?”


    It was the last voice she expected to say her name and she didn’t want to respond but she knew she had too. Spencer may be her girlfriend but she’s Paula’s daughter too even though the mother didn’t know about the first part.


    Without saying a word she raised her head out of her hands and looked into blue eyes that were so familiar, but not the same. The reminder made her chest constrict painfully.


    “You were with Spencer for most of the night. Tell me what happened.”


    Taking a deep breath, she summarized what had happened that night (minus the making out) from the second they picked her up to the moment Dano and Aiden…. her and Clay, found the girl in the parking lot.


    She noticed that Paula’s eyes didn’t blink once as she relayed the facts to her. There was hurt in them, but there was also a coldness that Ashley had learned to be afraid of, she never ever wanted to look in the mirror and find that stare in brown eyes again.


    “So you left my daughter to take care of herself when she was visibly sick?” the woman asked with a look of disbelief and disgust.


    She didn’t respond. She didn’t blink. She didn’t breathe. She just kept staring into those eyes and braced herself for the inevitable conflict.
