    The night is too dark, too spacious, too quiet, and you’re not there to hold me.


    She felt weak, useless, defeated, shattered, and so tired. Her legs realized this and backed her up till her knees came into contact with the chair. Sitting down, she ran a hand through her brown locks and stared blankly across the room at the clock on the far wall. ’2:46′.



    It was a half hour and several minutes later when Aiden, Dano, Sean, and Boz walked into the hospital. The first two were dressed in new clothes while the other two remained in their attire from the club. The Carlin’s were inside the hospital somewhere having a family meeting that Ashley couldn’t have cared less about. She just wanted to know if Spencer was ok.


    The worry was wearing away at her and as grateful as she was for Chelsea’s kindness, the girl just couldn’t ease any of the emotions nor stop the guilt that kept piling onto her already threadbare heart. When she saw Dano and Aiden walk in, holding a fresh pair of sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and some tennis shoes, she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry or just do both. She ended up doing neither and wordlessly looked up at the two. Aiden’s eyes were bloodshot and he reeked of a pungent stench. ‘He’s high. Smart move.’ And she meant it.


    After everything that had happened tonight, the things they had seen and done, there needed to be a calming period. The marijuana wasn’t an escape tool, it was a method of chilling the fuck out before you turn all that pent up aggression on yourself or those who are closest to you. She was half glad he decided to smoke up.


    Dano handed the clothes to Ashley and gave a small smile, the first one anybody had seen in several hours though at the time, it seemed like an eternity. It wasn’t a real smile though, it was just a lopsided turning up of the corner of her mouth. It didn’t show in her eyes. She didn’t mean it. But that didn’t matter. It made a similar smile show up on Ashley’s face and in turn, slightly lifted her up.


    She took the clothes and walked to the reception desk to ask where the bathroom was. After being given instructions, she walked into the room and locked the door behind her. She was deathly afraid to look into the mirror, afraid of seeing a monster, a different person, or nothing at all. Learning at an early age that how you see yourself is in many cases how the rest of the world sees you, Ashley kept her mirror time to a minimum. Even if she stood in front of it she would only scrutinize what she was wearing or how her make up was or why in the hell won’t her hair work with her. Superficial thoughts to divert the focus from herself. The worst was when she would look into her eyes and see what few people saw and what even fewer understood; The real her.
