Shane is silent for awhile and takes in everything that I have said. Shanna begins to fuss and she picks her up to rock her. Shanna quiets down and grabs on to Shane’s shirts. She loves her mami and I know she loves me too.

Shane: Our children are our children Carmen. Nobody can tell you that  their not because we know the truth. I understand where you are coming from because if I was in your shoes I feel the same way to but Shay loves you and Shanna loves you. Every child has favorite parent but that doesn’t mean that they don’t love the other less. Shay clings to you more than he clings to me.

She was right Shay clinged to Carmen more because Carmen was more motherly to him. Shay was Shane’s brother so she was more of an older brother or father figure to him, because Shane did guy things with him. Carmen would hold Shay at night when he cried from nightmares, or listen to him tell her his fears. Shay went to Shane with the stuff he felt as a boy. Skateboarding, fights, and girls. Carmen realized that they had a balance in their household that she neglected to see. Later that night as they all sat down to eat dinner Carmen observed her family. Shane was helping Shay with his homework while holding Shanna in her arms who was banging on the table and making baby noises. Shay leaned over to kiss his sister and she gave him a slob filled kiss on the check. Carmen realized how stupid she was. They were family not because of who was biologically linked to who but because they had loved for one another. Carmen leaned over to take Shanna in her arms. She gazed at her daughter and Shanna gave her a wide toothless smile and in that instant Carmen realized that Shanna was a combination of her and Shane. She was Shane’s biology and demeanor but the efforts of Carmen’s hard work and love. She looked to Shay who was biologically linked to Shane but she was the mother that he needed and he loved her for that. She then looked to Shane who was staring at her the whole time. Shane nodded to her and smiled. She knew that Carmen had realized that love not science was important she was Yoda after all.
