    And Then…You

Once she determined she wasn’t there, she crossed yards and went to the back of Bette and Stevies place.  She looked under the fake rock and grabbed the spare key.

After letting herself in she looked though the entire house.  No Stevie.

She pulled out her cell and called her sister.  Suddenly that eerie feeling Bette was having earlier was spreading through her as well.

After waiting for the beep she began.

Shane:  “Fuck Steve where are you.  Bette’s freaked out and something is just wrong.  If this is another one of your little stunts I swear I’ll kick your ass.  Please just call me… someone it doesn’t matter, just…call.”

She ended that call then called Bette.

    Bette:  “Well?”

    Shane:  “Nothing.”

    Bette:   “The studio?”

    Shane:  “I looked everywhere.”

Bette:  “Shit.  Her car!  Is it there?”

    Shane:  “No, its not.”

Bette:  “This isn’t like her, she always answers.”

Shane:  “I know.  Maybe she bolted again.”

Bette:  “No she wouldn’t do that.  Not again.  She swore on her child’s life she wouldn’t do that ever again. I believed her.”

    Shane:  “Me too.”

They both sat in silence as they thought.

Medic:  “We’re here.  Ma’am you’re going to have to loose the cell.”

    Shane:  “Bette, where are you?”

    Bette:  “The hospital.”

    Shane:  “What?!”

Bette:  “I’m fine.  This is a precaution really.”

They pulled up and opened the doors, wheeling Bette out.

    Shane:  “I’m coming.”

Bette:  “No, no it’s fine, really.  I just need you to find Stevie.”

    Shane reluctantly relented.

Shane:  “Ok but when I find her I’m going to kick her ass.”

    Bette laughed a bit.

Medic:  “We have a possible cardiac arrest here.”

Dr.:  “It’s going to have to wait.”

Medic:  “Wait?!  We have signs representing themselves.”

Dr.:  “Yeah well we have a gun shot victim rolling in now.  Close range to the torso.  We have to take this one first.”

Bette looked to her right as the other patient was wheeled into the ER right passed her.

Suddenly Bette’s chest became tight once more.  The pain of recognition ripped though her as each bit of the fellow patient became revealed.  The boots, the tastefully ripped jeans, the previously white t-shirt, the tan skin, the trendy hair cute.  They all passed by her in a blur.

A small whimper escaped her lips then a gasp before the scream ripped though her lungs.

All Shane heard was the sound of plastic hitting the linoleum floor then the phone going dead.  She didn’t miss a beat as she ran towards her pick up in what felt like slow motion.  If this was a movie this was when the tragic music would begin and the montage of emotions would play across the screen.  This was the tear jerker, the panicle.  The moment that changed each characters life.  But this was no movie, and unfortunately things were going to change.

    Bette had found Stevie.
