Cornucopia ~ Chapter 7 ~ Thanksgiving Wednesday (Part Three and Four of Four)

“You’re welcome.  You go home and have a huge glass of scotch.”

Bette smiled gratefully at the stranger.  She wrapped one arm around David’s shoulder and headed back the several blocks to where she had parked the car.

When Russ returned to the phone he had dropped, he heard Tina peppering the absent listener with questions.

“Uncle David, are you okay? What’s going on?  Are you hurt?  Talk to me!  Why did that woman yell?”

“I’m fine, Tina.  There was a mishap with a little boy.  He tripped over a cable and was headed into a large pole but I caught him in time.  He’s fine.”

    “Are you okay?

“I’m fine.  The kid’s fine.  The woman with the boy, probably his sister, though, is not fine.  She looks like the type who will fret about this for years.”

Bette’s heartbeats did not begin to slow for almost 15 minutes.  She was angry with herself, not David.  Her nephew had tripped.  An accident.

“Aunt Bette, are we still going to the parade?”

“”Hm, I’m sorry, what did you say?”

“Are we still going to the parade?”

“You don’t want to go?” Bette panicked, but kept her voice even.

“Nooo.  I want to go.  I thought you were mad at me.”

Bette stopped and looked at David for a moment.  She knelt on the ground and faced him, “I’m sorry I was so quiet.  I am not mad at you.  I was frightened that you could have been hurt and it has been taking me a while to calm down.”

David looked at her skeptically, “You’re not mad?”

“No.  You did nothing wrong.  Did you run ahead of me, when I told you you couldn’t?”

    “No.”

“Did you unbutton your coat so you would catch cold?”

    “No.”

    “Did you hit someone?”

    “No.”

“Were you mean to anyone or lie to someone?”

    “No.”

“Then there is no reason for me to be mad,” Bette concluded.  “But because I got scared, I’m going to hug you tight.  Don’t whine.”

Although Helena enjoyed watching the balloons, she was still restless.  She knew that somewhere in that area was something that was always fun.  She slowed until her bodyguard had caught up with her.  “Mr. McAvoy,” she asked the retired NYPD officer, “Isn’t there some place around here that I used to visit for fun?”

    1. I will say again, you do families very well. I thank you for having Jenny confused by a spud, it’s so apt. A wonderful story Spumoni, and particularly nostalgic for me. I haven’t been able to return to NYC since I left over 3 years ago, and I’d lived there for over 20 years, 10 of the just a few doors east of Serendipty. My brother had had the apartment for years before me, so perhaps I wandered by and didn’t make note of Jenny or Dana. My brother had watched several friends go through what Russ was dealing with. An admirable work all together. I look forward to your next effort as I continue catch up on your older stories that I missed.

    2. Good job IceCream I can’t wait for part 4. This is just like a reminder of the last holiday and a gear up for the next. Perfect timing because we have time to enjoy it better than in the middle of a holiday rush. Thank you, Md

    3. “Fuck, Porter, Tina’s the top!” LMAO!! Still claiming this would be first place on my holiday ‘must see’ list if you could bring it to life on the big (or little) screen!!! You have seemlessly woven their lives together… awesome!!!

    4. Thank you thank you for a beautiful story and a lovely depiction of my old neighborhood on the upper west side. It was awesome seeing our beloved characters in some of my old haunts, and the convergence is just so…so heartwarming, thank you.
