Cornucopia ~ Chapter 7 ~ Thanksgiving Wednesday (Part Three and Four of Four)

A man standing next to the interloper told him, “Wait your turn, you idiot.”

There was a chorus of similar sentiments.  The clerk looked around at the small crowd and, to its cheers, dramatically returned the beans he held in his large copper scoop into the barrel of decaf hazelnut beans.

“May you be cursed to drink store brand canned coffee for the rest of your life,” Alice yelled at him as the offender stomped away.

Thirty minutes later, Alice stood in front of the smoked fish counter, one number away from being served.  She watched in shock as the dark-haired teen standing next to her ordered the last of the smoked Nova Scotia salmon. Lenore’s favorite.  “NOOO!” Alice yelled like a madwoman at the counterman.  The counterman ignored her.  It wasn’t the first time that passionate customers had squabbled.  Alice saw that she was being ignored and acted quickly.  She addressed the girl who was about to deprive her of the means of her salvation. “Please don’t take that.”

Helena was amused by the intensity of the other teen, “There are many other delicious items.”

“I have to have that.  Have to.  See, it’s my mother’s favorite and, um, something happened today, I mean, it was just an accident, but I don’t think she will see it that way because, well, um, there have been a few other accidents, all of them, really truly have been accidents, and if I can just sneak home tonight when she is asleep, then maybe in the morning, after some time has passed, and especially if she is eating her favorite breakfast, then maybe she’ll think it was all pretty funny and she won’t kill me or send me to one of those Outbound things because I could never survive in the wilderness, look at me, do I look like someone who could sleep in a tent?”

Helena stared at Alice and instructed the counterman, “She can have it.”  She them turned to the blonde, “I understand about mothers.”

Bette felt good that she had not allowed David to misunderstand why she was silent.  As she had grown older, she had realized that she had often misunderstood her father’s silences as disapprovals. She was still rattled, though, and was stalling driving them to the Brandshears.  She decided to bring their hosts something for breakfast.  It was a small gesture of thanks, but the Brandshears would be uncomfortable with anything larger

    1. I will say again, you do families very well. I thank you for having Jenny confused by a spud, it’s so apt. A wonderful story Spumoni, and particularly nostalgic for me. I haven’t been able to return to NYC since I left over 3 years ago, and I’d lived there for over 20 years, 10 of the just a few doors east of Serendipty. My brother had had the apartment for years before me, so perhaps I wandered by and didn’t make note of Jenny or Dana. My brother had watched several friends go through what Russ was dealing with. An admirable work all together. I look forward to your next effort as I continue catch up on your older stories that I missed.

    2. Good job IceCream I can’t wait for part 4. This is just like a reminder of the last holiday and a gear up for the next. Perfect timing because we have time to enjoy it better than in the middle of a holiday rush. Thank you, Md

    3. “Fuck, Porter, Tina’s the top!” LMAO!! Still claiming this would be first place on my holiday ‘must see’ list if you could bring it to life on the big (or little) screen!!! You have seemlessly woven their lives together… awesome!!!

    4. Thank you thank you for a beautiful story and a lovely depiction of my old neighborhood on the upper west side. It was awesome seeing our beloved characters in some of my old haunts, and the convergence is just so…so heartwarming, thank you.
