Cornucopia ~ Chapter 7 ~ Thanksgiving Wednesday (Part Three and Four of Four)

As Russ assumed would happen, Shane made so many trips back and forth with questions, that she eventually transferred most of the box’s contents to Russ’ kitchen.  He then demonstrated peeling, boiling, mashing, chopping, mixing and other basic skills, and Shane mimicked what she had seen.

“You are a junior Julia Child!”

    “Who?”

    “She’s a famous chef.  She’s on television.”

    Shane thought, “Tall? Funny voice?”

    “That’s the one.”

    Shane looked skeptically at Russ.

Overall, there wasn’t much conversation except about the food preparations.

Russ watched the clock and at 5:30 he brought his speaker phone to the kitchen table, pushing aside some of the ingredients from the food box.  Shane started to protest when Russ explained, “My niece is calling.  We’re making a pie together.”

    “Over the phone?”

    “We’re going to try.”

    The phone rang seconds later.

“Hello, this is Tina’s Uncle Russ, safekeeper of culinary secrets, may I help you?”

Tina laughed, “And if had been someone else calling?”

“I would have hung up and changed my number.”

    “Hi, Uncle Russie.”

    “Hi, Teeny Tina.”

    “Do over.  Hi Uncle Russ.”

    “Hi Tina.”

“I have all of the ingredients sitting right here.”

    “First, where are the hellions?”

“They’re playing the video game you sent.  Brilliant idea, Uncle Ross.  And I tore the twenties you sent in half and gave one to each of them.”

“Good girl.  Now read me what you have bought.”

“It would have been easier if you had just sent me the recipe.”

“Nope.  Only I am permitted to know the recipe.  When we are done tonight, I will cast a spell and wipe your memory clean.”

“How did you wind up with the recipe?”

“My mother and sisters were always too busy squabbling to pay any attention when your great grandmother made it.  I paid attention.  Now quit wasting time and tell me the ingredients you’ve got.  Oh, how rude of me.  My next door neighbor is with us. She has kindly allowed me to assist her as she prepares her holiday dinner.  Tina, meet the next Julia Child. Julia, meet Tina.”

“Hi Julia.  Nice to speaker phone bake with you,” Tina laughed.

    1. I will say again, you do families very well. I thank you for having Jenny confused by a spud, it’s so apt. A wonderful story Spumoni, and particularly nostalgic for me. I haven’t been able to return to NYC since I left over 3 years ago, and I’d lived there for over 20 years, 10 of the just a few doors east of Serendipty. My brother had had the apartment for years before me, so perhaps I wandered by and didn’t make note of Jenny or Dana. My brother had watched several friends go through what Russ was dealing with. An admirable work all together. I look forward to your next effort as I continue catch up on your older stories that I missed.

    2. Good job IceCream I can’t wait for part 4. This is just like a reminder of the last holiday and a gear up for the next. Perfect timing because we have time to enjoy it better than in the middle of a holiday rush. Thank you, Md

    3. “Fuck, Porter, Tina’s the top!” LMAO!! Still claiming this would be first place on my holiday ‘must see’ list if you could bring it to life on the big (or little) screen!!! You have seemlessly woven their lives together… awesome!!!

    4. Thank you thank you for a beautiful story and a lovely depiction of my old neighborhood on the upper west side. It was awesome seeing our beloved characters in some of my old haunts, and the convergence is just so…so heartwarming, thank you.
