Cornucopia ~ Chapter 7 ~ Thanksgiving Wednesday (Part Three and Four of Four)

    “Hi Tina.”

    “The ingredients, Tina.”

    “I’ve got:

“The butter and Crisco are chilled?”

    “Yes.”

     “Ice cubes in the water?”

    “Yes.”

“You bought all new spices?  I don’t want you using some spices that your mother has had open for years.”

“All new,” Tina replied, her impatience evident.

Russ looked at Shane, “Julia, my niece Tina is an excellent baker and she is impatient with my questions.  But did you know that even the best pilots do a pre-flight check.  Isn’t that true, Tina.”

“Yes, Uncle Russ.  Even the very best pilots that the world has ever known.  And the best surgeons check the instruments. And the best trapeze artists check the rigging,” Tina half-teased, half-whined.  “But this is a pie.”

“But it will be the perfect pie if you would stop dawdling.  Now, is it whole milk, are the eggs room temperature, and have you toasted the walnuts and broken the candy into bits?”

“Yes, yes, no, no.  I’ll do those after the crust is made.”

“Do you have a 9-inch pie pans?”

    “Three.”

    “Good.  Let’s get started.”

Tina was an experienced dough maker and that step, the hardest, went quickly.  They disconnected the call for the 30 minutes that the dough would need to chill.

Shane and Russ continued preparing the McCutcheon dinner.

During the second call, the dough was rolled out.

“Uncle Russ, I’m using the magical rolling pin.”

“Good luck sneaking that back into the cabinet.”

“Do you have the beans to put in the crust?  Julia, that is a trick from the original Julia.  It keeps the pie dough from rising or getting too dark when it bakes.”

    “Yes, Uncle Russ.”

Tina and her uncle bantered as Tina made the pie filling.  As they bantered, the apartment door burst open and a voice boomed out.

“Russie, the Lazarus of East 7th Street!  It is a good thing your money is running out and you can get Medicaid, because this AZT shit costs more than diamonds!”

As Russ’ Good Samaritan friend continued his usually welcome monologue, Russ grabbed the receiver of the phone to shut off the speaker.

    1. I will say again, you do families very well. I thank you for having Jenny confused by a spud, it’s so apt. A wonderful story Spumoni, and particularly nostalgic for me. I haven’t been able to return to NYC since I left over 3 years ago, and I’d lived there for over 20 years, 10 of the just a few doors east of Serendipty. My brother had had the apartment for years before me, so perhaps I wandered by and didn’t make note of Jenny or Dana. My brother had watched several friends go through what Russ was dealing with. An admirable work all together. I look forward to your next effort as I continue catch up on your older stories that I missed.

    2. Good job IceCream I can’t wait for part 4. This is just like a reminder of the last holiday and a gear up for the next. Perfect timing because we have time to enjoy it better than in the middle of a holiday rush. Thank you, Md

    3. “Fuck, Porter, Tina’s the top!” LMAO!! Still claiming this would be first place on my holiday ‘must see’ list if you could bring it to life on the big (or little) screen!!! You have seemlessly woven their lives together… awesome!!!

    4. Thank you thank you for a beautiful story and a lovely depiction of my old neighborhood on the upper west side. It was awesome seeing our beloved characters in some of my old haunts, and the convergence is just so…so heartwarming, thank you.
