Bette was preparing dinner as an amused Tina watched.  There was nothing inherently funny about what Bette was doing but Tina had still not been able shake her image of the old Bette who thought that the kitchen consisted of a refrigerator, a coffee machine, and a counter on which to unpack the containers of take out food.

“The teacher wanted to finish story time so dismissal was late again today.”

“The parents must be in an uproar but the nannies must be Mrs. Halpern’s biggest fans.”

“I was talking to Ed while we waited.”  Although all she could see was the back of Bette’s head, Tina smiled because she knew that Bette’s eyes had narrowed as she scowled.  Bette still viewed Ed and his partner Jamal as the enemy ever since their son Lucas had been Angelica’s competition for a spot at the Center for Early Education. Now that both children were in the same class, Bette had decided that Lucas was the enemy, since he might be the primary threat to Angelica’s admission to Yale.  She had doubled the alumni contribution that she had already doubled when Angelica was born, but she was certain that constant vigilance couldn’t hurt.

Bette turned to face Tina. “I’m sure he had a great deal to say.  He always does.”

“Bette,” Tina warned, “He and Jamal are going to be in our lives until the kids leave for college, so you have to figure out some way to cope.”

“Fine.” Bette composed her expression into one of excitement.  “What did he say, T, oh what did he say?”

Tina shook her head, but couldn’t help smiling.  “We were talking about things to do with kids during the holidays.  He said that there used to carolers in the neighborhood.”

“Bullshit. If West Hollywood had had carolers, we would have known. Well, you would have known.”

“We must have been at the office and missed them.”

    “A benefit of working late.”

    “Bette.”

“Once upon a time, Christmas carolers were seen in the kingdom of West Hollywood.”

    “Bette.”

    “Magical WeHo fairies.”

    “Bette!”

    “Magical WeHo LGBT sprites.”

    5. That was just as amazing and beautiful like your other stories. I have so missed your talented writing on this site. Can this be a possible return to the forum. I have so missed the “the wolve” story- “Backstory”. I was hoping that this was a version of that, but I am just as happy with the one I got.
