    “Bette.”

    “What.”

Tina glared at Bette.  “Ed said that 20 or 25 people walked through the neighborhood caroling.”

    “But happily they don’t now.”

“The guy who organized it moved to Palm Springs.”

“Good.  He took the caroling with him.”

“When I was a kid, a big group of us would carol through the town.  You didn’t?”

“In West Philadelphia?  The only thing that would have kept you safe was that the muggers never want to mess with crazy people.”

    “Too bad.  I had fun.”

“I’m sure.”  Bette turned her attention back to her cooking.

Tina was silent for a few moments, trying to decide the best words to use.  She gave up.  There were no words that would ameliorate her partner’s reaction.  “Ed thinks that if someone would be willing to organize it, the caroling could start again.”

Tina had watched as Bette’s movements froze.

“T, so Ed is thinking of organizing a group to carol.”

    “Sort of.”

“You’re going to become a caroler?”

    “Sort of.”

Bette turned again to look at Tina.  “Sort of?”

“I’m thinking of doing the organizing.”

    ~~

Bette had assumed that Tina would come to her senses and realize that an important movie executive, with a four year old daughter and a newly rekindled relationship, did not have time to organize a neighborhood event.  Bette was certain that Christmas carols, inevitably tied to the religious holiday, would not be a favored event in a neighborhood full of residents whose bad experiences had left them cynical about organized religion.

    Her assumption had been wrong.

    December 1

“I think a weeknight would be better.”

    “Hmmmm.”

“I think people won’t want to use up their weekend time. What do you think?”

    “Hmmmm.”

Tina looked across at Bette, who was propped up next to her in their bed, reading a biography of an artist unknown to Tina.  She frowned and addressed Bette again. “I rented some reindeer for authenticity and put them in our backyard.”

    “Hmmmm.”

“They’re swimming in the pool right now.”

“Hmmm…wait!!  Did you just say something about reindeer?”

I have so missed the “the wolve” story- “Backstory”. I was hoping that this was a version of that, but I am just as happy with the one I got.
