“I said that I’ve rented some reindeer for the caroling and they’re swimming in the pool.”

    “You rented reindeer?”

“Uh huh, and they’re swimming in the pool.”

“Why would you,” Bette exclaimed as she threw off the bedcovers and jumped to her feet, “rent reindeer and let them in our…” Bette paused.  “Oh.”  She turned and faced Tina.  “I wasn’t paying attention?”

    “You weren’t.”

“Sorry.  It’s a very good book,” Bette appealed for forgiveness.  “What were you asking?”

Tina hid her smile behind an expression of hurt.  “Whether you thought the caroling should be on a weeknight.”

A sarcastic response was on Bette’s lips, but she suppressed it before it escaped.  Under the circumstances, it would have been even more unwise than usual.

As Tina watched Bette’s struggle, she found it increasingly difficult to hide her amusement.

Bette considered the question. “T, um, people have complicated weekend plans. A weeknight would be better. Wednesday.  Maybe Tuesday.”

    “Good. Wednesday it is.”

    Bette smiled a pained smile.

Tina now hid her triumphant response.  She had gotten Bette’s input.  Even better, though, she had gotten a great story to tell the framily. Bette thought there were reindeer in the pool. Alice was going to love it.

    December  2 – 4

Bette had decided that passivity was her best response to Tina’s caroling planning. She listened, giving her opinion about details when it was requested, but no more than that.

Bette finally gave up her hope that Tina would abandon the plans.  Bette even acknowledged, privately and only when she was being honest with herself, that she resented the time Tina surrendered to the caroling folly when Bette could have been the center of that attention.

She was certain it would be a disaster, but Tina was a big girl and could cope.  However, Angelica was not a big girl.

“Mama B, when do we go carling?”

    “Caroling, sweetie.”

    “But when do we go?”

Bette thought for a moment.  “In twelve days.”

    “But that’s too long!”

Bette noted that her daughter’s feelings were just the opposite of her own. In fact, she had considered suggesting to Tina that they needed more time and that the caroling be postponed until there had been time to properly prepare.  Maybe a year or two.  The mother, though, looked at her daughter and saw the child’s disappointment. “Twelve days will go by so quickly.”
