“Are you scared of babies, Mommy?”
Bette couldn’t help but laugh. “No, baby. Not of babies. Just … I guess the responsibility.”
“What’s … spons … blity?”
“Responsibility,” Bette repeated, waiting until Angelica could pronounce it correctly. “It means that you’re in charge of something, and that you have to take very good care of it.”
“That’s okay. You take care of me, Mommy.”
Bette chuckled as she walked over to Angelica’s seat, and patted her head lovingly before kissing her hand and rubbing Angelica’s back. “Yes, baby. I’ll always take care of you.”
“Brushed my teeth too,” Tina smiled, walking in to the kitchen with a great sense of accomplishment. “Mmm. Cheerios.”
Just as Tina was leaning in to give Bette a sweet morning kiss, Angelica asked another question: “Is someone responsible for Momma B?”
“Yeah, me,” Tina chuckled quietly. She giggled as Bette playfully swatted her with the newspaper as she walked off to the kitchen table. She was still laughing as she leaned in and gently kissed Angelica’s head. “I’m kidding, baby. Your Momma B is very independent.”
“In … deep …”
“Independent,” Tina repeated, doing just the same as Bette who was watching in equal amusement and pride at her wife’s explanation.
While Angelica ate her cereal, Tina and Bette leaned against the counter beside one another, Tina’s head on Bette’s shoulder.
“Can you believe we hadn’t taught her those words yet?” Bette whispered, smiling as Angelica played with her food, talking to herself.
“What? Responsibility and independence? Bette … she’s not even in school yet! I think we should keep the crazy, complicated words for Kindergarten, don’t you?”
Bette couldn’t help but smile with pride. She loved her daughter, her wife, and the life they had made for themselves. They had compromised, but never their values or beliefs, and it had paid off in full. They each had a successful job, a pleasing romantic life, and a child that gave them more happiness than they thought possible. Their friends had come around not long after her arrival back home all those years ago, and her and Tina had created a wonderful life together. “We’re so lucky.”
Tina closed her eyes and smiled. “Yeah.”
“I’m lucky to have you, T.”
The statement was so powerfully sweet that Tina picked up her head and looked into Bette’s big brown eyes. “Aww baby. I’m lucky to have you, too. I’m so happy.”
They had never truly taken each other for granted, and it showed in the incredible bond that no one could ever shake. The moment between them was so beautiful.
“Mommy? Who’s responsible for Cheerios?”
They both chuckled to themselves. The unknown had brought Bette closer to Tina, and it had brought them together. There was always an element of the unknown in her life, and in Tina’s life, but they never let anything question their certainty of love. Love would remain the same, regardless of questions, or gifts, or even time. They smiled as they brought their hands together in a gesture they’d kept over the years, locking eyes once more. They were together – always together.

You deserve to be in the spotlight. I am going to watch Family Man although, somehow, I think I’m going to be disappointed in it after your story. Thanks again and good luck to you.
From my very short experience in the land of fan fiction, I believe you truly deserve the accolade as your stories have kept me thoroughly entertained. Bette Porter is so much sexier than Nicolas Cage!

I don’t think I’ve missed a story from you ever since you started writing on this site, and I have loved witnessing the evolution of your stories and of your writing. You have sometimes taken risks, and it has always paid off. You’re one precious writer on this site. Now about the story, I’ve loved it from beginning to end! This whole story had me rather confused for quite some time. I haven´t seen Family Man, so nothing made sense. Well it does now and I´m definitely going back to reread the entire piece.
