Once she had formulated the planned area for the Papyrus, she then moved onto the Canopic Jars, historically these were placed within the tombs and were used following death where the jars, made of clay, were used for the storage the internal organs once they were separated from the body and treated. They had the complete set of four closed jars to display, with the stoppers of the four heads – human, baboon, falcon, and jackal — representing the four protective spirits called the Four Sons of Horus. Bette planned to use the far end of the south gallery for this display due to the wall size and the lighting from the skylight above would fit well with the staging she had ordered.
The next piece Bette was looking to place within the display was the 1350 B.C New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, Seated Scribe, made out of black granite, and although only a small piece measuring less than 7 cm, it held great significance and needed the correct lighting to highlight its particularly graceful artistic value of being produced during the reign of Amenhotep III. She decided to place this within a corner position with both up lighting and down lighting; the staging would be stepped so that it would be viewed at above waist height, but also so that the height of the staging created the imagery of the piece actually being bigger than it actually was.
Bette enjoyed working on the technical aspects of a new exhibit as well as choosing specific pieces of art to show, she gained much pleasure and satisfaction in the placing of the exhibits, lighting to highlight specific features of individual pieces, the staging she knew was important due to the uniqueness and individualism of every piece of art she had ever come across. The colour schemes to each exhibition was also important in order for the pieces to be highlighted within their own history and culture, therefore she had chosen earthy tones and sandstone colorings for backgrounds and highlighting and finally dark burgundies for the staging coverings.
Bette had achieved a lot of work this afternoon, especially considering the lunchtime events, she was very surprised that she had the ability to concentrate on her work, but as she sat back and perused the work she had completed she actually felt very focused, and as she thought about it, that was probably due to the fact that her and Tina had talked so much, that by itself had cleared her head beyond belief. Today she felt like the world had been lifted from her shoulders in comparison to the same time yesterday when she had hoped to be looking forward to spending the evening with Tina, hoping to clear the heavy burdens between them, when it had in actual fact turned into a completely heart wrenching event.
