Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Twenty Four, Part Two (based loosely on HYD: Returns)
Bette disagreed, of course. But donning a mask of meekness and obedience that she hardly possessed, she decided to steer clear from trouble, clamp her lips shut and keep her opinions to herself. Which, in all honesty, was eating her up inside. She was expressive. She was passionate. And to bottle in such emotions – especially negative ones – was proving to be a daunting task.
She was sorely disappointed. And though she was happy that the deal was just moments from being finalized, she couldn’t help but think of the disservice the simpleness of this gathering was to all the sacrifices she and her dad had endured just to reach this point. She had almost destroyed her relationship with Tina because of this deal. So she thought, at the very least, that they deserved a conference hall that was adequately decorated for this very special occasion. Instead, they were doing it in a room which was, frustratingly, all white and drab and dreary. There were no colorful banners. No eye-appealing tarpaulins. No helium-filled balloons. Heck, there wasn’t even a single plant or flower to decorate and breathe life to the flatlining place. The only source of color in this amazingly boring room was the bright yellow dress that Alice wore and the navy blue asymmetrical blouse that she herself donned. Everyone else, and by that she meant all the fifteen souls allowed inside to witness the signing, were dressed in either black or gray suits – pitifully adding to the monotony of it all.
For the umpteenth time, Bette sighed at the lost possibilities. This thing could’ve been so much more. For all the heartache and drama that led up to this moment, it annoyed her to no apparent end that her and Jill’s dad conspired to downplay its magnanimity and importance by dialing down the flashiness and ostentatiousness that this momentous occasion was due. This was the pinnacle, the climax of months worth of work.. of wooing.. of desperate ass kissing. This was it. And to her, it fell.. well.. flat. This was another moment in her life when reality failed to match up with her grossly unreachable expectations, of the once promising present ending up to be such a disappointment. Bette blew out a breath and leaned back against the wall, angry at herself for bringing this annoyance unto her own self. It was her fault for expecting too much. Cause really, aside from gaudy banners and cheesy balloons, what was she expecting to see during the signing? Did she think that fireworks would come shooting out from the end of their pens after their dads had signed the last page of the contract? Was she expecting confetti to explode out of Joyce’s ass the moment she stops holding in her breath from all the excitement that she was barely bottling in? Did she in any way believe that a choir of angels would suddenly manifest themselves and start singing their heavenly song the exact second Melvin and William stood up and shook hands? What?
