Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

    The Next Morning

    10:30am

Jodi and Tom sat in the guest chairs in Bette’s office.  Jodi didn’t look at Tom at all when she signed, but stared at Bette, knowing that the Dean fully understood what she was saying in ASL.  It burned her that Bette would be so biased and refuse to sign when she knew she could.  "You know, you’re the one who made me his advisor.  I didn’t ask for Lani Shipman, I didn’t ask for Uday Rao, and I didn’t ask for Justin Donovan.  Now, you’re telling me that Donovan’s project, one that I was kept abreast of and that I sanctioned was unsuitable and you want to suspend him?  This isn’t high school?  Am I right?  This isn’t high school?" Tom watched Jodi sign and interpreted to Bette.

Bette sat behind her desk, her hands clasped on the surface, listening to what was being said.

Before Bette could begin her answer, Jodi signed more and Tom said, "By the way, I tried to reach you last night, but your TTY wasn’t set up."

    "Was it urgent?"

"About this," she explained in sign language.  "I wanted to do some damage control with you.  I know Lani Shipman came here and had a meltdown about Justin’s art piece.  I just wanted you to understand.  I didn’t want you to view it as a problem."

"If you knew I might perceive it as a problem, why didn’t you just tell him to choose a more appropriate project?"

"It’s not inappropriate.  When is art inappropriate?  When is expression misplaced?"  Tom asked for Jodi whose hands slapped against each other as she signed quickly.

Bette shook her head with authority.  "I’m not going to argue semantics or censorship politics with you.  Believe it or not, we’re on the same page, here.  It’s-it’s just that I’m going to have to deal with Phyllis and the Board of Trustees about this.  I guarantee you, it won’t be pretty.  A temporary suspension is mild compared to what could be done.  Justin’s a good student, but the Board will use him to set an example.  Expulsion, perhaps?  You’re his advisor.  They could come after you.  I should have reined you in."

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
