Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 29B

"What?"  Jodi shouted.  "Reined me in," Jodi spoke aloud, didn’t bother signing, and Tom was not needed to interpret.  She was on her feet now and angry.  "You can’t rein me in.  Who do you . . .?”

"Poor choice of words.  I’m sorry, Jodi.”  Bette motioned at the chair, asking her to have a seat again.  She waited until Jodi was seated and said, “I meant that I have a responsibility as Dean and when something like this arises that is . . . so controversial, I’m expected to handle it.  He’s a grad student.  How would that look if he was expelled?  I don’t want that.  Three days off campus and everyone is happy–the Board will feel like they’ve taken a hard line and what artist couldn’t use three days to just create.  It’ll blow over by then.  If-if I sit and do nothing. . ."  Bette tapped the tips of her fingers on her desk, drumming out a steady beat every few seconds to emphasize her words.  "If I say that it wasn’t all that bad and don’t take the leadership role here, they’ll run roughshod over the whole department.  Every dime we want to spend will be scrutinized; every event we want to organize will be appraised and examined.  They’ll have a stranglehold on us.  You can’t want that."

"Maybe I should resign.  Maybe this isn’t for me.  Actually, I like to mentor these students, but I won’t be constrained from presenting and encouraging art.  That’s not me," Tom interpreted.

Bette nodded her head.  She couldn’t agree more.  These were the same thoughts she was battling daily.  CU was far too conservative and narrow-minded to produce great works.  It was too conventional and that was not Jodi and it wasn’t Bette.

Bette’s phone rang and she looked down at the display for her private line.  It was Kit.  She turned back to Jodi ignoring the call.

The very brief pause caused Jodi to take a step back mentally, change the subject, and allow things to cool in the office.  "Are you going to set up the TTY at your house?" Tom said after watching Jodi sign.

Bette sighed.  "You know, my family is extremely important to me–the most important part of my life.  With my work and Tina’s obligations, our time together is unfortunately limited, so when I’m home, I prefer to devote my time or as much of it as possible to them.  I’m-I’m not singling you out; l I’d tell any of my faculty the same.  I am always email accessible and when I’m here, my door is always open–figuratively, if not literally.

    1. ‘ she looked at Tina and playfully accused, “Cougar.” ‘ – LOL – Tina certainly has come a long way from the first pages of ‘Laid Up’. – PortiaO, Thank you very much for producing all those wonderful pages!

    2. OH MY FUCKING GOD… that was … i have no words… i wish it didn’t end… that a scene i pray we see in the last eppy… loved it… and what a book you have here… it took a while to read… but i did…

    3. Wow, I don’t know what to say. The detail you give to each character and storyline is breathtaking. What a beautiful imagination you have. I love your writing so much that I even wanted Helena’s and Dylan’s past life story to never end :). I’m a little bit nervous that someting will happen to Shay before Shane can take custody. Who’s the mystery man at Alice and Dana’s wedding? A long lost relative of Alice’s? Wow, Bette and Tina, effing hot. Thank you so much for the update. Don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Portia… translating “thank you” into all the known languages on this planet wouldn’t be enough at this point. I know I type it, and I certainly mean it, but it lacks… I don’t know anything else to say but that, though. So, again, thank you. You manage to get everything in there, and I don’t know why, but the “Sweatin to the 80’s” line made me giggle, a lot. You have a very visual style of writing, I’m right there with the characters. I see them, hear them perfectly. I love the way you write, I love this story. Thanks (again) for sharing with us.

    5. Yes, you’ve got me googling folks that don’t exist. You’ve created an entire world, fleshed it out and populated it with people whose lives are fully integrated into it. You’ve made TLW, “Do what it (should)do”.

    6. I have totally been floored by this story!! this last chapter totally knocked my socks off!!! I’m so glad Bette had the change of heart about mo…. this should be really interesting! PPS

    7. I miss this story. :( It’s so awesome and realistic. And it shows so much growth in the characters while staying true to them at the same time. And the storylines are just fantastic. *sigh* Yeah, I miss this story.
