Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 31 (Conclusion and Epilogue)

“Way of the world, love.  So…”  Helena put slices of pie on individual dessert plates. “How’d you get it?  There was a bidding war and at least ten high-powered studios were clamoring for it.  It’s the hottest property around.”

“I met the author when I was recovering at the Center last year.  Her son was a patient with severe head trauma.”  Tina bowed her head, shaking it sadly.  “He didn’t make it.  After her son died, we spoke a few times.  She just really needed support.  We became friendly, I guess and once she knew I was interested, she got the ball rolling.”

    * * * * *

Bette and Mo were lighting the hanging lanterns as night settled in.  Marilyn was cradling a sleeping Angelica in her arms.  Peggy watched her lover and the toddler for a few moments and was reminded of how Marilyn had been the more maternal one when Helena was a toddler.  She recalled how Marilyn tucked her daughter in at night, “Remember Helena—God loves you, your Mummy and Daddy love you, and Aunt Mare loves you.  Everyone in the world loves you pookie.”   When Marilyn had been in their lives, Helena was a walking poster child for healthy self-esteem.  Peggy thought of her own failures, but brushed them away.  She and Helena were finally on the right track and their relationship had never been better.  She walked over to Bette.

    “Another wonderful party, Bette.”

“Thanks, Peggy.”  Bette stepped down from the footstool and moved to a row of votive candles on a small table.

“You and your brother look identical.  Are you twins?”

Bette shook her head.  “No, about two years apart and not even the same mother.”

“Hmmm.  The similarities are amazing.  The two of you have many of the same mannerisms.”

“That’s what everyone’s telling us, but we don’t see it.”

Peggy glanced at Marilyn.  “Your little girl’s really grown in the past few months.  I remember getting you to Big Bear to get her back from that weak and vapid milquetoast of a hospital worker.”

Bette stared at Angelica.  They had been so fortunate.  They could have lost their daughter forever.  It wasn’t a time Bette particularly wanted to recall.

“And this afternoon, it was so nice and considerate of Tina to ask my…Marilyn to bless the table.  Thank you.”  Peggy picked up the lighter and lit the candles.  “And what a relief not to have to go around the table to tell everyone what we’re thankful for.”  Peggy pretended to shiver.  “Such a hideous, little ritual.”

    1. Portia, congrats on finishing this epic! I will always be a fan, and I was very happy to be one of the people to encourage you, and who knows–maybe you’ll have another fanfic in you that will need to come out! You’ve inspired so many of the writers here, so thank you, and I hope we’ll see you around!xoxo

    2. wow what can i say, this story has been the best time and time again and i can say that i’ve enjoyed every bit of it, though I’m extremely sad that this is it for laid up. My favourite couple have obviously been dana and alice, and you’ve written them and their story just perfectly, how it should have been, for me anyway. For every chapter, page and word….THANK YOU PORTIA!!!!!!!!!!! xox

    4. Oh PortiaOnly I can only say a heart felt Thank you for brining us this impressive and comprehensive epic. I have ready this story from the start. It has always amazed me how you wound the pieces of the series into this complete work. I love where you have taken all of them and how it was so true to the characters we have know. Thanks for all you hard work.

    5. Portia, thank you so much for this epic love story. I’m happy that all of the characters are happy and content. The loop holes that the show had created, you have thoroughly patched. That for me is remarkable. Jenny’s death in season 5 and her magazine being thrown in the pool – what can I say, your attention to detail is a gold standard in fanfic. Kudos to you and also Wendy for creating this wonderful story.

    6. Thanks so much for sharing this incredible journey with us. This is one of the best and engaging stories I have ever read. You are an remarkable talent!!

    7. Thank you for this story. What an undertaking! You got all the main characters involved and kept me interested. And more importantly, you finished it. I love that!

    9. I read this chapter as slowly as I could so that I could savor every word of it. It was worth me taking the time, although I was fully aware that each time I clicked “Next page” I was that much closer to the finish. This was a fantastic end to such a richly layered story. Everyone got their ending, and each and every one of them earned it… the struggles each couple/family had to overcome to get to their happiness made it all the more believable. You didn’t cheat, Portia, not the readers, not the story. This has been such an absolute treat to read, through all the highs and lows, and I’ve loved every single word of it. (And kudos for not forgetting Jenny this chapter! heh) Thank you, Portia, for writing this story and taking us on the journey with you. Take care, and I hope we see another story from you soon.

    11. Hello PortiaOnly, This story has been an absolute joy to read. It has taken much time and dedication from you to create a momentous melodrama. So many of the images and scenes including dialogue where taken from the show and seemlessly interweaved in to your take on events.I stand up and applaud you and your wonderful talent.Thank you ever so much for sharing it with me.Your Loyal Fan.PS – I hope that you continue to write about these characters and post your work here.

    12. well after about a month and a half im finally finish with your story and as I wrote you before I truly believe you are a gift to writing and taking readers along for the experience. You did an absolutely remarkable job with this. The story telling, the storyline, the interweaving of the characters, seasons, cannon and AU was beyond incredible.
