    Bette, Tina, Dana, Alice, Shane, Carmen, Helena, Dylan, Kit, Angus, Peggy, and Marilyn discover what John Lennon said in the song, “Beautiful Boy” is absolutely true: “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”

     

    “You call yourself a fool,” Kit said as she shook her head.

     

    “Yeah, that, but also you tell yourself that the lottery winnings were more trouble than they were worth—people were coming out of the woodwork begging and you didn’t want to turn people down; you didn’t know who your real friends were anymore—did they like you or your millions?  You had purpose when you worked and you hated those six weeks of living the life of the idle rich.”  He paused and looked at Peggy and Helena.  “No offense.”

     

    “None taken,” Peggy said.  “We’re hardly idle.  Go on and explain this synthetic happiness.”

     

    “So, you convince yourself you’re happier without that money.  You know if the lottery agency called and said, ‘Oops, my bad, it was sixty million not sixteen that you won,’ then you’d be thrilled.  You’d run down to the lottery office to collect, but since you know that’s not going to happen and the money is gone, all gone, you make the most of it.  You say, ‘ah, I didn’t want it anyway.  It made me miserable.  I’m happier now that I can go back to work, make a living, not have strangers pleading with me for dough, not have to get calls in the middle of the night about how this person needs an operation or this person is about to lose their house.  Now…now, life is good without that money; so much better.’  Synthetic happiness.”

     

    “So, you don’t think you’re suffering from any of that.  You’re truly happy that you’re staying in New York despite wanting to be out here with us?” Bette asked.

     

    “I’ve been a New Yorker for forty or so years.  I don’t want to start over no matter how much I love you guys.  Visits, yes.  But…”  He sang, “I grew up ridin’ the subways, runnin’ with people, up in Harlem, down on Broadway.  I’m a Native New Yorker.”  He quoted from an old disco song that every real New Yorker sang with pride no matter the age.

     

    “He’s right.  Once you’ve lived there, it’s in the blood.  You can’t shake it.  It’s like this exciting pulse that beats inside of you.  It’s life,” Peggy said.

     

    Marilyn looked at her.  “You really want to go back.”

    6. Portia, thank you so much for this epic love story. I’m happy that all of the characters are happy and content. The loop holes that the show had created, you have thoroughly patched. That for me is remarkable. Jenny’s death in season 5 and her magazine being thrown in the pool – what can I say, your attention to detail is a gold standard in fanfic. Kudos to you and also Wendy for creating this wonderful story.

    13. I read this chapter as slowly as I could so that I could savor every word of it. It was worth me taking the time, although I was fully aware that each time I clicked “Next page” I was that much closer to the finish. This was a fantastic end to such a richly layered story. Everyone got their ending, and each and every one of them earned it… the struggles each couple/family had to overcome to get to their happiness made it all the more believable. You didn’t cheat, Portia, not the readers, not the story. This has been such an absolute treat to read, through all the highs and lows, and I’ve loved every single word of it. (And kudos for not forgetting Jenny this chapter! heh) Thank you, Portia, for writing this story and taking us on the journey with you. Take care, and I hope we see another story from you soon.

    18. well after about a month and a half im finally finish with your story and as I wrote you before I truly believe you are a gift to writing and taking readers along for the experience. I had to stop several times for work or sleep but it was well worth the time. I prolonged finishing the last chapter didn’t want t see it end, but like the L word, like tibette chemistry, all good things but come to end….Bravo!! my friend I hope to see a book with your name on it forreal..til next story………

You did an absolutely remarkable job with this. The story telling, the storyline, the interweaving of the characters, seasons, cannon and AU was beyond incredible. You have amazing talent and I hope to read more of your incredible work. Amazingly done!
