A thought of a life outside this bubble of grief didn’t really exist.

    –

“Don’t say that.” Alice pleaded quietly.

“What? Death bed?” Dana rose her none existent eyebrows. “That’s what this is. I am dying, Alice.” She said this with such a gentle tone of voice that Alice couldn’t help letting out a loud sob. She covered her mouth with her hands, as if she wanted to press the crying back inside. She took a deep breath when she finally was able to swallow it.

“Please don’t say that. Even if it’s true.” She whispered. “I don’t” There was nothing she could say.

“Al Turn around and come here.” Dana demanded. Alice slowly turned around, facing Dana, who was on her hospital bed, under the covers with her now characteristic hat on sideways. Alice stared at her. For the first time in a long, long while, for the first time since they broke up, Alice took all of Dana in. Despite the hospital accessories, it was still so much Dana. She was still the beautiful, goofy Dana she loved. She was still there. As she looked at her, Alice’s face widened in a big grin.

“What’s the matter? Are you laughing at me?” Dana asked, suddenly a little uncertain. Alice sat down, still grinning, but now with tears welling up her eyes.

“I just realized how incredibly happy I am that you’re here.” It was crazy. Some kind of joyous feeling took her over. She was so happy that Dana was really still there. Tears spilled over her eyes and Alice clung very carefully but with a fierce intensity to Dana in a hug. She wanted to speak, but he couldn’t bring herself to get her voice together. Tears were literally flooding from her eyes now, and Alice could feel them water Dana’s neck. That made her feel guilty, because she felt she should be strong for Dana now. Not the other way around. But when she felt Dana’s hands on her head and in her hair, it didn’t help how guilty she felt. She couldn’t stop crying, and she couldn’t let go of the grip she had on Dana.

“Alice. I’m sorry.” Dana was crying now too. “I’m sorry I hurt you.” Dana desperately hugged Alice closer, as if she was afraid the other woman would rise up and leave after hearing those words. But Alice stayed. She was standing with one leg on the floor and with one knee in the bed, still clinging to Dana.

    1. Vaya – thank you so much. Your story gave Dana and Alice a sense of closure that I didn’t get from the show. They deserved the chance to battle Dana’s cancer together.

    2. thank you. this was much needed, and i totally wanted to see dana and alice get back togeter. at least before she died. :( i too had tears in my eyes as i was reading this. i miss danish.

    3. Great post! I’m with ackemat in that it gave me a sense of closure I didn’t get from the show. And even though it’s a harsh reality, I hated the fact that Dana died alone. Very well written and I loved how went from the present and flashed back to Dana and Alice in the hospital. It made it seem more real. Great job!
