LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-15
”Mom!” Angelica called from her room, Tina closed her eyes and kissed Bette’s forehead sliding down her legs.
Bette saw her disappear so she thought she’d take the opportunity to leave, it was after ten.
”Everything ok?” Bette entered Angie’s room, where Tina was leaning over the bed.
”she says she has a headache… I don’t know, I think she’s burning.”
Bette approached taking the thermometer from the bedside table ”let’s see…” she whispered ”hey honey, look at this doll, it will be your companion…” she said gently to Angie handing her a small pink and green unicorn.
Tina remained crouched staring at Angelica while Bette checked her temperature ”almost 39”.
”how is that possible?”
”it happens in children…”
”Bette, she has never had a fever this high except for chickenpox.”
Bette looked at Tina ”Tee… calm down… do you have an antipyretic for her?”
”yes…” Tina whispered going into the living room to return with the drug.
”ok…” Bette said keeping calm, it was her field.
Bette stroked Angelica’s hair then looked at Tina, she was worried, she took her hand ”how about you take a shower and get ready for the night? I’ll stay here in the meantime.”
Tina looked at Angie sorry and then at Bette ”ok… I’ll be quick though”.
When Tina returned Angelica was asleep, Bette was sitting next to her, her hands caressing the little body.
”she fell asleep…” Bette smiled ”it will get better, don’t worry…”
”I’m not used to it…that’s what scares me…”
”I know it’s normal.”
Bette stood up ”you know I think I could stay here for the night Tee…if she needs me I’ll be here too..if it’s not a problem I know we’ve never done it here with her…”
Tine grabbed Bette’s hand and squeezed it, intertwining their fingers ”it would be fantastic…of course I want it B…”
Bette and Tina settled into the blonde’s bed, snuggled together, whispering things they already knew but never tired of saying. Bette held Tina close until she fell asleep for that little while, until Angelica cried at 2 and 5 in the morning, her fever still high with absurd spikes, only to finally let her rest around six.
