“Winnie maintains it was an accident and the tape seems to support that contention,” Peggy said. “The district attorney had offered her probation and mandatory anger management counseling in exchange for her guilty plea on a misdemeanor assault charge.”
“The conviction, along with the tape itself, will practically guarantee your petition for sole custody,” Warner said. “And any visits will have to be approved and supervised.”
“But what about her collusion with Gail Guthrie?” Helena was disappointed, but not surprised.
“We can’t verify it,” Warner said.
Helena let that sink in. Over the past three days, Lara had helped her understand how manipulative Winnie had been from the very beginning. Together, they realized that she had been setting Helena up for years, orchestrating situation after situation in which Helena could be embarrassed or her actions misinterpreted. She knew without doubt that it was true. And she knew she couldn’t prove it.
“I think it may be best for the children that she not serve any time,” Peggy said, “but I also believe that she is too unstable right now to be responsible for them.”
Helena rubbed her temples. Her every instinct was to protect her children from this predatory and unbalanced woman. Her every maternal instincts told her that excluding their mom from their lives might do every bit as much harm as she would hope to prevent by doing it. She and Lara had spent hours trying to come up with some alternative, to no avail. She looked to Lara.
“I support your decision,” she said quietly as Helena signed both documents, “You’re being more generous with her than she has ever been with you.”
“The emergency custody order will be in place by three o’clock,” Warner said. “The hearing on that will take place no later than the beginning of next week. We’ll file the petition for sole custody at the same time, but that hearing won’t be scheduled for several weeks.” He picked up the documents and left the conference room.
“My darling,” Peggy said as he leveled her gaze on Helena, “Lara, Warner and I, all of us, we know that you are did not do this lightly or to be vindictive. I am so very proud of you.”
Jenny arrived a couple of minutes after Kit. Together, they answered all of Alice’s questions about what they saw and heard the night she went over the railing.

ok winnie really needs to be in jail, this is crazy! glad alice is on the road to recovery and shane is taking such good care of her. keep up the great writing!

Yay! happy jig. After my declaration of crushing on the Pegster I feel sort of bare – just to clarify – it’s not like I want to get down with the lady but her voice is so smooth – I think I’d like her to read to me – wait now I’ve said way to much. Your story still fab and I love it so.
