Bette held Tinas hand and rearranged the ice packs that were surrounding her body in an attempt to make Tina more comfortable, a futile but loving gesture. Please wake up baby, please, she whispered, a desperation creasing her lovely face.

Tina felt a wave slap her in the face, causing her to sputter and cough. She was annoyed because she had been so peacefully floating in the calm cool water. She looked again at the shoreline, so far away and made some feeble attempts to pull herself toward it. Her resolve became stronger. A deep longing inside pushed her to try–to reach further, to pull harder. As the shore came into focus she could see a lone figure standing, waiting, a package in her arms. Bette! Bette was waiting. She could get to her if she worked harder. At the edge of her consciousness there was a nagging detail left dangling, like a sock left on the clothesline after laundry day. Something she had to finish. Helena, she whispered.

Bettes heart ripped in two at that moment. She was ecstatic that Tina was regaining consciousness; she was devastated that Tina was not calling her name. She continued stroking Tinas parched skin and speaking to her in a soft loving voice, but a bit of her spirit died as they pulled up into the ambulance bay.
Im sorry, maam, but you cannot go any further, said an orderly, guiding Bette to the waiting room.
Bette, juggling her own purse with one hand, pulled out Tinas cell phone from the other bag she was holding and stepped outside the waiting room entrance.
Where the ***** are you luv? We leave for the airport in 40 minutes! Helenas stressed voice answered the call.
What? Helena, is this you? asked Bette.
Christina? Helena replied, clearly confused.
No, Helena, this is Bette calling from Tinas phone, said Bette.
Where the ***** is she? We leave in a few minutes, said Helena.
Helena, listen, Tina is at the hospital, said Bette in a calm voice belying her feelings.
What!
She fainted on my porch. No one knows how long she was there, said Bette.
Is it the baby? questioned Helena.
We dont know yet. I thought youd want to come, said Bette.
