    THIS STORY IS INFLUENCED BY SEASON 2 SPOILERS (although less so now than at the start of the story). Tina collapses from an unknown ailment. Bette refuses to leave her side.

    Of course, Ill be there as quickly as I can, Helena replied while disconnecting the line.

    Bette looked up to see Shane and Alice running across the Emergency Room parking lot.

    Is she okay?

    Whats going on?

    What did they say?

    Sorry, I dont know anything yet. We just got here 2 minutes ago. I just came out here for a minute to call Helena, said Bette.

    You called that *****? asked Alice. After the way she has treated you?

    I had to, Tina was calling for her, Bette said, her lip quivering.

    Alice immediately took Bette into her arms while Shane looked on with a helpless expression on her face as Bette began to sob.

    Im just going to go in and make sure they arent looking for us, said Shane sheepishly moving past the two women, now both crying.

    Alice put an arm around a shaking Bette, and guided her into the waiting room just as a woman came out from a side corridor, looked down at her clipboard and called, Kennard party casually, as if summoning them for a table at a restaurant. All three women moved towards her at once. She looked up and said, Ill just need one of you. Bette followed her.

    How is she, asked Bette, thinking she was going back to see Tina.

    What? Oh, I dont know dear, Im just registration–you know, getting her insurance information and such, said the woman with a kind smile.

    After giving Tinas details, name, date of birth, address and phone number, the woman asked, next of kin.

    That would be me, said Bette, Elizabeth Porter.

    And Elizabeth, what is your relationship to Miss Kennard? asked the registrar.

    Shes my wifeI mean shes my partner, replied Bette.

    Oh, I see, said the woman sympathetically, but if authorization is to be made for treatment or surgery, who would be the next of kin?

    I would be, repeated Bette, she is the dependent on my insurance plan.

    I see that, answered the woman, but do you have a legally drawn power-of-attorney?

    Why the ***** do I need that, retorted Bette angrily.

    Really Elizabeth, Im not trying to be difficult. It is a standard regulation that same-***** couples have to prove that a legal document exists for power-of-attorney in lieu of a marriage license.

    6. So, the doctor grabbed Helena’s arm thinking she’s Bette!! Hopefully, Helena will do the right thing and get Bette in the room with Tina! Great chapter…post soon!!!!!!!

    9. At the edge of her consciousness there was a nagging detail left dangling, like a sock left on the clothesline after laundry day. Something she had to finish. “Helena,” she whispered.

      That’s right! Helena is just one piece of dirty laundry left to get rid of. GO tina GO!

      “She is asking for someone to come in right now. Which one of you is her partner?” asked the doctor.

      “That would be me,” said Helena, brushing past Bette dismissively.

      “Come with me Bette, Tina has been asking for you for the last hour,”

      Thats just…oh man, thats just great!
