New York Minute – Chapters 27&28

    “Coke is fine “

    “Ice ?”

    “Please “

Tina got up and went into the kitchen – she poured a glass of white wine from the fridge for herself and took a bottle of coke from the fridge. It was still odd to not pour two glasses of wine, to not get two beers from the fridge and hand one to Bette, not to share kisses with Bette who would taste of expensive scotch. She went back into the sitting room – Bette had removed her shoes and socks and was lying back on the sofa. Tina put the two glasses down and joined Bette. It was a great feeling to be so close to the other mother of her daughter.

“Can I ask you something ?”

    “Fire away “

    “Do you miss alcohol ?”

Bette opened one eye and frowned for a few seconds as she considered her reply. Tina got onto the sofa and snuggled close

“At times it’s a huge horrendous craving. Most of the time its not even a minor thought in my head after a terrible day “

“That’s what is odd – when I have a bad day I think the only things that help me cope are holding Angie and a large glass of wine or three. I can remember so clearly – I don’t even have to close my eyes and I can see you so clearly standing at the drinks table pouring us both a drink. Even if I had been horrible to you – you always poured me a drink or if you were feeling silly you’d get that cocktail book out and make some lethal turbo charged drink that could have passed as paint stripper “

Bette laughed “Yes – I still make a mean cocktail – at some point I will run down my list of alcohol free cocktails – Angie will love them – I’ll add rum to yours “

“So how hard was the change ?”

“I fought it – hell you know me – I would fight a ten tonne truck if I was in that sort of mood. The doctors sat me down after I collapsed and said look – the booze is killing you – your body can’t take it any more and neither can your personality. Alcohol is an depressant and in my mood that was the last thing on earth I needed. I had pretty much given up on myself – I was still in so much pain about us. But maybe it’s a tribute to the human spirit that I found I didn’t want to kill myself. Maybe somewhere deep – very deep inside of Bette Porter there was this person that you had fallen in love with and who deserved a break. So – not being a total masochist I decided to sort myself out “

    4. Fantastic chapter AllyE. thanks you so much for posting this one, I do love this story. It’s the triumph of tre love over adversity and all sorts of bs. It shows the forgiveness that has to exist between to people that have been in turmoil and then decide enough is enough, and let their love shine through. I am so happy for Angie and Bette, they do so deserve to be known as mother and daughter. Wonderful chapter. Thanks for posting.
