Shane and Molly: A Love Story – Chapter 17

“How was your flight?” Shane asks, trying to make small talk, as she helps Leonard load their bags into the back of her Jeep.

“Bumpy,” Leonard says. Throwing his last bag into the back, he turns towards Molly and throws his arms out, “Give your Dad a hug, honey!” Molly wraps her arms around her father and squeezes tightly.

“It’s so good to see you, Dad. Shane and I are so excited you could come out and spend some time with us before the wedding.”

“Well, I couldn’t miss my baby girl’s wedding now, could I?”

Molly gives her Dad a peck on the cheek and opens the door for him to get in the Jeep. “Sophie and I have a dress fitting at noon, Dad. I figured you and Shane could get lunch together and get to know one another.”

Leonard smiles weakly at his daughter and then at Shane. “That sounds like a wonderful idea, pumpkin,” he says, unconvincingly.

Shane returns Leonard’s weak smile and climbs into the driver’s seat, running her hands through her hair. She was quite worried about how lunch would go with her soon to be father-in-law. “Everybody buckled in?” Shane asks, turning around. Seeing that everyone was, she puts the car in drive and pulls away from the airport. “Baby, are you and Sophie going to join me and your father after your fitting?” Shane asks, kissing Molly’s hand.

Leonard squirmed in his seat, watching this exchange. “Baby?” he thought to himself. “That’s my baby.” Sophie smacks her father on the arm, warning him to behave, as Molly turns around to see what the fuss is all about.

“Yeah, we’ll be there as soon as we can, babe,” Molly says, looking at her father pointedly, imploring him with her eyes to give Shane a chance. She leans over the arm rest and gives Shane a gentle peck on the cheek to comfort her, knowing how nerve wracking this experience is for her.

Shane and Leonard are walking over to The Planet for lunch, having just dropped Molly and Sophie off at the seamstress, leaving them the car. Shane nervously fidgets with the ring box in her pocket, not sure what to say to Leonard. After they pass a few store fronts, Shane decides that she needs to say something before she and Leonard get off on the wrong foot. She takes a deep breath and says, “So, um, Mr. Kroll, I know you aren’t exactly excited about me and Molly getting married, but I just want you to know how much I love your daughter. I’m going to take good care of her.”
Leonard just nods his head and doesn’t reply. Shane anxiously looks around, not sure what to do next. Against her better judgement, she places her hand on Leonard’s arm and stops walking. “Mr. Kroll, I’m really trying here. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”
