    Sharmen: I Gotta Go…Part19

“Drew?” Shane said in that tone that her voice took on when she was near the ocean. It was serene, calm but mostly wise. Drew noticed it everyone noticed it, and oh, what a sight it was to notice.

    “Hmm?”

“You take this next swell, I’ve got the sister set. It’s about 5 minutes away, the sister set about 15. They’re big, can you handle it?” Shane asked. Drew looked at her like she had 8 eyes. Shane was seriously a surf god. There was no way even an experienced rider could read the waves that good. Something like that what Shane had, ran in your blood. Drew looked out at the razor straight horizon and all she could see was fuzz where the ocean line, met the sky. She shook her head and opened her mouth, closing it back up smartly. She shook her head again and decided not to ask of the wisdom that was Yoda, just to go with it.

It had been about three minutes and Drew could now see the set coming in. They were perfectly staggered and curling beautifully already. They didn’t seem to be losing speed and Drew was a little wary.

“Uh, how big?” She asked, trying to sound casual.

Shane closed her eyes and titled her face into the sun, she looked majestic with her short board bobbing up and down between her legs.

“Average, 9 footers. Some 6. Can you handle it?” Shane repeated the question patiently.

Drew faltered, the biggest she’d ever ridden were 4 footers on a fish. But she didn’t want to wimp out.

“Yeah,” she said with finality and determination. But Shane had heard her indecision.

“Can you handle it? I don’t want you to get pitched, don’t be a *****. If you can’t rip it in total control, don’t risk it. I’m not pulling your beaten ***** from the rip current,” Shane said caringly. Drew smiled and thought about it seriously.

“I can’t handle the 9 footers, at least not on the first ride. But I think I got the 6′s. Let me rip a small one back to shore and I’ll wait for you there- or do you want be to paddle back out?” Drew asked as she started paddling to her left, seeing a smaller sized wave coming in.
