So much more than just a kiss…
What did it matter, really, if she was? It didn’t mean anything… She was with Jodi…
Looking around the backroom I had used as a hiding-place, I felt the wrenching of my face extend to a wrenching of my heart. Why couldn’t I do it? Why couldn’t I just forge this friendship with her? Why couldn’t I stop glancing at her lips from time to time? Dreaming about their softness? Dreaming about the way our skins had always seemed to melt together when we would make love… I had thought that had to do with making love to a woman, but I hadn’t sensed the velvet like merging with Helena, or with Brenda for that matter… It was as if she and I were made out of this indescribable material… Molecules or elements, that only in each others presence fused into a chemical reaction.
I sighed again…
What was the use of going over this again and again? What was the use of the tug of my soul, hidden there, right above my bellybutton, at the border of my chest bone? What good did the butterflies do that I had felt the moment I had made out her silhouette from out the dancing crowd? What difference did it make that I would always love her?
The alcohol had numbed my brain, but not my senses, quite the contrary to be exact; I seemed to feel everything clearer, more vivid.
I had sensed her entering the room, even before I heard it. I closed my eyes, feeling how my heart picked up the pace that it always did in her presence. As I felt her hesitation, I glinted aside, smiling bitterly as my eyes confirmed what my other senses had already determined, feeling my body respond with even more intensity as my eyes savoured her in that one stolen glance. Her hair, surrounding the perfect features of her cheekbone, the curve of her lips, as she hesitantly smiled. I felt my heart leap up, and resented myself for it, but couldn’t help to feel it…
Just moments before this had been just a room…
But when she was near, nothing was ‘just’… It seemed that she was the rock, thrown into the pond, evoking ripples of emotions that overwhelmed me, leaving me dizzy. I felt the little waves in my abdomen, felt the trembling of my hands, as she, hoarsely, uttered one word:
