Chapter 29

“Hang on – you cannot just say that “
“Its not up to me to tell you why she has left – it was her decision. She left me”
“Did you ask her to stay ?”
Emma rubbed her face again “I begged her to stay Tina – you might not believe that but I begged her to stay”
Tina was in shock – what the hell had gone on ?  Why would Kate leave Emma ? Why would she leave like that ? Why was she just finding out about it now – like this ?
“Oh God”
“I wanted to tell you myself – I have no doubt that she will be in touch. But I wanted to tell you personally – you are my daughter after all – whatever you think of me”
With that Emma walked out of the apartment leaving Tina in a state of shock at what the last few minutes had done. She sat down for a few minutes just trying to take it all in. finally she picked up her phone and texted Bette
“Please ring me or come and see me ASAP – E has been round – K has left her – WTF”
Next Tina ran downstairs in search of her father. He was back down with his laptop searching for a crockery design that he liked the most.
“Dad – did you see mom ?”
“I didn’t hear any broken plates so I figured that you two had played nice”
“Its crazy – I cannot believe what she told me – you will not believe it”
“What ?”
“Kate has left her”
Matt would have fallen through the floor if he hadn’t been sitting down. He stared at Tina
“You are kidding “
“No – she looked so tense – I couldn’t figure out what she was going on but she came out and said that Kate had moved out of the apartment”
Matt immediately remembered what Kate had said a couple of weeks ago – she said that she had enough and wanted out – she had even said something about. He had just thought that she was blowing off steam
“She’s walked out on Emma because of you and Bette ?” Matt asked
“She says not  “
Tina was now starting to shake a little – Matt saw that Tina was upset. He got up and went over and took hold of her
“What the hell is going on dad ?” she demanded
“I don’t know honey – I really don’t know”
He held Tina for several minutes hoping that in some way he was comforting her. He wished that he had pressed Kate when she had said she had enough of Emma – he had heard her venting about Emma a lot so he hadn’t really taken it seriously – well it looked like he had been wrong – Kate had walked out on Emma. He eased away
“Are you okay ?”
“I have no idea – this is so out of the blue “
“Kate never said anything to you ?” he questioned
“No – I know that they haven’t been getting on because of me but I never thought that it was serious – this is serious  – she has never left mom before – why dad ?”
“I have no idea sweetie – you are going to have to speak to Kate “
“You are right – what time is it ? — why am I asking that ? “
Tina took a few deep breathe and dialled her mother’s number – it rang and rang and finally
“She might be in court “
“Its nearly 5:30” Tina replied
“God you are right – where has today gone ?”
The phone kept ringing – finally it went to voicemail – Tina cursed but waited until she could leave a message
“Mom – please ring me – mom has been to see me – what the hell is going on ?”
She rang off and looked at her father
“What the hell is happening dad ?”
“I have no idea Tina – are you okay ?”
Tina took some more deep breaths “Shocked more than anything”
“Do you want a drink ?”
“Yes but I better not “
“Have you spoken to Bette ?”
“Texted her – she’s in classes until about now “
“Are you supposed to seeing her tonight ?”
“Yes – I am cooking for her and we are supposed to be going to the movies but I need to find out what is going on “
Matthew nodded “Of course you do – couples have spats all the time you know – this doesn’t mean that this is permanent “ he tried to reassure her
“I would say that Kate moving out means its pretty damn permanent “
“They might be able to work things out – this is a real shock honey “
“I just knew there was something wrong – she was calm in a really odd way”
“And she didn’t give you any clues as to what had happened ?”
“No – she said it wasn’t because of me”
Matt didn’t know if that was true or not – or something Emma had said to make things easier for Tina. If they had split up because of Emma’s attitude to Bette and Tina then there must have been something very wrong in the first place – he guessed the Bette and Tina relationship had just been a final straw.
“Did she say anything else ?”
“Just that she begged mom to stay “
Matthew was concerned by that comment –  Emma was a proud woman but she was human – especially when it came to Kate and Tina – they were her life.  And now both had moved from their home in the space of a couple of weeks – that was going to be a very hard thing to deal with.
