“For Kate to bail out – there is a huge reason – and there is only one that I can think of and no one has said it out loud yet”
Bette raised an eyebrow “You don’t know for sure Ti”
“I do – one of them is screwing around and we both know which one is probably is”
“You think Emma is being unfaithful ?” Bette said trying not to sound surprised
“Yes – do you think its Kate ?”
“I have no idea” Bette said “ I don’t really know “
“My opinion is that Emma has been fucking around and Kate has found out and has found out and given her an ultimatum and Emma won’t stop so mom has walked out”
“Its possible “ Bette admitted –  Emma certainly had the ego to have an affair and assume that she would get away with it. But – Bette thought from what her mother had said that it was Kate who was had someone else. Why else would she leave the apartment ?
“It will be Emma” Tina said
“Does she have a rap-sheet for these things ? “ Bette asked
Tina was silent “I don’t know – but if you were profiling them which one would you say was being unfaithful ?”
“Profiling is very complicated and you cannot make assumptions” Bette began
“Come on Bette – Emma is the dictator in charge of her own law firm – a huge firm that has got bigger every year. Emma is the one who thinks that she can tell her daughter who she  can and cannot sleep with – which one is having the affair ?”
Still Bette didn’t actually think it was Emma .
“I have no idea Tina because I have no idea what has been happening between your parents for the last four years – which yes your mother made sure happened. I know that you are upset Tina but we don’t know “
Tina shook her head “I know which one my money is on “
“Well lets wait and see – I will go and get the coffee”
Bette went into the kitchen and made two cups of coffee – she always drank hers black and Tina just took a tiny bit of milk and half a teaspoon of brown sugar. She stood and watched the coffee machine finishing its job while she tried to get her own head around what was happening to Tina’s parents. She was faced with her own dilemma and how to deal with it. Bette didn’t know what to say to Tina but she did want to try and prepare her for the fact that maybe she didn’t know her parents as well as she thought she did. If it had been Emma who had been unfaithful then why all the secrecy from Emma ? Why had Emma not just told the truth and admitted her infidelity to her daughter. Instead she had said that Kate would tell Tina everything – something that Rosemary had repeated almost word for word. That told Bette a couple of things – that whatever had been happening had been happening for a while and that this was something that was Kate’s duty to explain to her child – that could only mean one thing – Emma hadn’t been screwing around – Kate had. And that was something that Tina was going to find it very hard indeed to deal with
