    The Art of Chemistry (4)

“Is this because you know I’m invited?”

Laughter followed suit, but Tina straightened her smile. “No, Alice.”

“Cousinhood is like the most important family, and you know you can’t ignore me. I have your number.”

“I could turn my phone off,” Tina wondered aloud, never afraid of hurting Alice’s feelings, because they both shared a similar sense of humor.

    “I know where you live.”

“Oh shit. Fine, Alice. Fine. Are you happy?”

    “Yup! I’ll see you there!”

Before Tina could get another word in, Alice was gone. Tina rolled onto her back and closed her eyes, trying to imagine a decent conversation with the brunette who always affected her – whether she wished it or not.

Any conversation Tina had with Bette after that night seemed to worsen the state of their relationship – however non-existent it was. Both were misunderstood, and the vicious cycle continued even at the various gatherings they attended. Alice had become wonderful friends with Dana, and so Tina was somewhat pushed into parties and dinners with her friend. Sometimes she went because of her undeniable feelings for Bette, and sometimes she refused for exactly that reason.

When she finally pulled herself up off the bed, she dragged her feet over to her closet, and wondered what she should wear. Thankfully Tasha called and helped her decide – some much-needed comedic relief.

“I think you should wear a dress, and we both know I’m not a fan of dresses, but I think someone is …”

Tina paused and struggled with her feelings for Bette again.

“Okay, you’re way too quiet. I’m actually just around your place, so how about I swing by? I mean, if you have to go to Lacy’s thing, might as well have some support, right?”

“Oh fuck,” Tina sighed, staring into her closet again. “I don’t know if I can do this, Tasha …”

“You guys need to get along for everyone’s sake – especially Alice’s. She’s even bugging me, and you know how much I hate all this fucking drama.”

Tina chuckled and sifted through the hangers of business casual outfits.

“And where did she even get my number?”

“Now you know how I feel,” Tina laughed, laying some options out on the bed. “I’m gonna go make some coffee. I’ll buzz you in when you get here.”

    “K.”

Just after taking the first sip of her coffee, there was a knock at the door, and Tina opened it to find Tasha with arms crossed.

    “You don’t look very happy.”

Tasha chuckled and stepped in, “Sorry. This girly stuff just isn’t me.”

“Thanks for coming over,” Tina smiled, walking them into her room to judge her top choices. “I like that skirt with the shirt and that outfit too, but also that dress beside it is really nice. I just don’t know. I don’t even wanna go.”

“Wow, that was fast,” Tasha teased, shaking her head, “You go from excited to sad in the blink of an eye.”

Very seriously, and as calmly as she could speak it, Tina tried to convey the difficulty to her friend. “I think … I’m in love with her.” She couldn’t see that Tasha was about to speak because she was so occupied with her own internal struggle. “No, I know that I am. I fell so hard the fucking moment I saw her. God … this feeling is the worst feeling … I feel like I need her … and she’ll just never feel the same way.”

Tasha watched Tina for a moment before nodding over toward the bed. “The skirt combo. It’s a nice outfit, and I think it will be popular …”

“With who?” Tina teased, resting one hand on her hip as she looked back to her friend. “Huh?”

Tasha raised her hands as a symbol of her surrender and laughed, “I’ll be out on the couch.”

“How do you know she’ll like it?” Tina called out after her.

Letting out a smiling sigh, Tasha walked over to the couch as she mumbled quietly to herself. “Because you’ll be wearing it.”

    2. Love this story and to know that it really did happen to two people that fell in love and have a life together is wonderful. Life is often that. We meet someone and don’t know just how to proceed to talk with them and we lose that connection because of the shyness or just not knowing if you should try to talk with them because you don’t know if you’re gonna get your head knocked off or what will happen. Keep the chapters coming. Enjoying it. Hope our two can get everything cleared up and start to date. Thanks for posting.
