The Dying of the Light Part 24

“Get.”  She repeated, punctuated with another slap, “out.”

Shane could see that Bette was running out of steam, and intercepted her hand.  “No.”  It was barely even said, but the intention was clear.  Shane was not leaving, not on the threat of character assassination, not with the threat of violence.

“Please go,”  Bette started to beg, pulling at her hands to free them.  “Please.”  Staying with her was bad, why couldn’t Shane see that.  The smell of decay and the grey of rotting flash was all over the room.  It was putrid, a morgue without refrigeration.

Why couldn’t she make her see.  “Go,” the word barely made it past her lips, “I don’t deserve you.”

Pulling Bette into her arms, Shane held on as tight as she could. “You do.”  She whispered kissing her on the cheek.

“Go, leave me… please leave me.”

“I will not leave you,” Shane calmly and carefully said.  “I will never leave you.”  Words meant so little to Shane, she had never been good with them in a past and she was afraid to say the wrong thing.

Bette sniffed trying not to cry.  Tears are useless, and they lie.  “Everyone else does.”

Shane nodded, knowing the fear of abandonment well.  Her and Bette had bonded over that years ago.  “I wont leave.”

“It’s okay,”  Bette started finding herself falling into the embrace and the promise it held.  “I know I don’t deserve anyone.  Don’t feel bad.”  She was hard to love and easy to leave.  Some things are just facts.

Shane felt tears prickling at her own eyes, “You deserve everything.  Everything.” No truer words had been spoken.

“Please.”  Bette begged one more time… she had to try, “go and be happy, please.”

Shane just held on, not knowing what else to do.  “I love you.  We all love you.”  She whispered, surprised to feel wetness on her shirt.

“Shane,”  Bette cried, burring her head in her neck.  She felt hollow, like something was ripped from her when the sobs were ripped from her throat.  At the back of her throat she could taste blood, a metallic sweetness that filed her senses.

Something snapped, and she didn’t know how to put it back together.

Shane held on tightly.  “It’ll be okay.”  She whispered, no knowing what else to do, “come back to us Bette.”  she could see the path lit in front of her for the first time and Shane knew it was going to end well.

It had too, there was no other choice.

“We’ll get you home.”  Even if Shane had to carry her all the way.

    1. Hi there, dear sweet Deean! Our nephew JC informed us you were in the Spotlight this week. We will make sure to join you over there, tonight. As for the story, we knew Shane was not going to curl and go hiding, leaving Bette alone. She knows her friend needs more that soft words. The assurance that she will not leave, no matter what, is exactly what Bette needs. Plus, know that she deserves to be taken care of by one of her loyal friends. Yep. Excellent choice. We are sure that Shane will make Bette to exteriorize those ugly demons that are playing games with her self esteem. Great update, dearest friend. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)

    2. This chap made me cry too. It’s like I really feel Bette’s pain too. I’m glad Shane has a thick skin and didn’t fall for Bette’s plan to get rid of her. I only hope Shane can get Bette to see she’s loved so much by the rest of the family and they need her back with them. PPS!!
