The Dying of the Light Part 26
Bette nodded, there was so much to say and she was trying to figure out the best way to approach the topics as she worried at the frayed edges of her favourite shirt. She fist got this shirt in college from and artist friend, it was a part of a performance art piece. Since then the paint had washed, and the colour faded, but it reminded her of better times. Reminded her of the passage of time.
“I want to see my daughter.” She blurted out after a time, the words shocking her as much as they did everyone else. “She’s, she’s my daughter and I’d like to be her… mother.” She said quietly, trying to erase the harshness of her first words.
Tina leant forward, and gently tilted Bette’s head to face her. “You are her mother, and you’ll see her as much, or as little, as you want.” It was time to start making up for the errors of her past, and this overture was needed, as much as it was deserved.
Bette grunted, nodding her head. “Until I say something you don’t like.” She mumbled, “and then we’ll be back here again.” Sullenly, her head fell between her shoulders.
“Bette.” Tina pleaded, wanting nothing more then to force the woman to look at her again, but knowing that now was not the time to try it. Bette needed to be comfortable, to have a distance so she could be honest.
Sighing, Tina rested her hands in her lap and spoke with a quiet confidence that she didn’t feel. “You don’t know this yet, but I have resubmitted the paperwork for your adoption of Angelica.”
“What?” Bette whispered, her head springing up to look at Tina. This had to be some kind of joke.
“I was wrong,” Tina continued, unaware of Bette’s interruption. “I should never have taken her from you.”
Bette held her breath, sure that this had to be some kind of dream. She’d wake up any minute, and the pounding of her heart and her shaking hands would be a memory, soon to be erased like any dream.
“you’re her mother…” Tina quietly emphasised, looking up at Bette, shocked by the paler of her face. “Are you all right?” She asked concerned. Without thinking, she rested a hand on Bette’s cheek, designed to calm and soothe.

Jackie 1, is right, despair is the greater enemy. This is so sad to read and I just wanted Tina to hold her and tell her that she had not let them down. I can’t believe that the story is almost done, with so much more for them to do. Thanks for posting.
WOW as always I am in awe! if this part isn’t great then I’d like to see what you think is great! You’re writing hits a place in my heart that is familiar yet so far away from me now. This story is amazingly heart breaking. Your talent is incredible… As a writer to allow yourself to be put in this scary shocking sad world is an amazing feat! you’re beautiful! I’m sad to see it end but I hope that in the end Bette is able to see just a sliver of hope perhaps in the eyes of her daughter. you’re amazing thank you thank you thank you for sharing this story!
this heart breaking. i hope bette finally gets it! :)PPS
Hi,dear sweet Deean! Holy wow! This was quite the confrontation we expected, when Tina would face Bette. No doubt that Bette is not ready yet, because she is just coming out of the darkness where she had been for years. Her loud claim as a mother was completely comprehensive. Tina took that right away from Bette for the longest time. However, it is true that Bette would need baby steps to be in the safe place where she will be able to be part of her daughter’s life. The meeting was illustrating for the therapist. She got lots of clues and now knows where she should work further. As for Tina, we don’t think she should give up on trying to work things with Bette, although it is not going to be an easy task. As for Shane coming in again to the rescue, we are glad that Bette still relies on her. She has done a superb job with her. Thanks for this magnificent update, although it was very hard to read.
