The Dying of the Light Part 26
Jerking away, Bette started to feel dizzy as her breathing became shallow and rapid. Her chest felt so tight, and her throat felt like it was closing. Gasping for air, she could only look at Tina with disbelief. How? Why?
“Bette I need you to calm down.” Natalie instructed, squatting by the couch. “Breath in and out. Slowly.” Natalie had been quietly watching the discussion, allowing herself to fall back into the role of observer and facilitator. This incident had been an education into the breakdown of communication that the couple had, and continue to, suffer.
Bette had a tendency of becoming withdrawn, not confronting the problem that existed. Whereas Tina tended to talk about the problem, regardless of whether or not Bette was paying attention, and ignorant to the other woman’s state of mind. No affair was responsible for the failure of this marriage. That was a symptom, not the disease, and now that Natalie had proof of this she could start to address it with Bette.
Bette tried to breath slowly as she was instructed, but she couldn’t. Tina was still sitting there, gawking at her like she was in a freak show. She’d been having dreams like this for so long.
“Bette,” Tina knelled down on the other side of Bette and held her hands. “You need to breathe.” She whispered, bring Bette’s hands to her chest and resting them there. “Breathe with me honey” She instructed, modulating her breathing to slow, even breaths.
Closing her eyes, Bette revelled in the moment and allowed herself to get carried away, unconsciously mimicking Tina’s breathing.
The room was clean, cleaner then it had been in the previous weeks. It was also devoid of everything that gave it character, that filled the little 2 bedroom home with love. Bette had officially moved out.
Two days ago, Bette had been released from the hospital, not recovered but on her way there. She was quieter then she had remembered her, more concerned about how she interacted with people; how those people would interact with her.
Tentative, introspective and bubbling with emotion this Bette Porter is someone that no one knew, and it was interesting getting to know her. Yet, Tina couldn’t help but mourn the loss of ‘her’ Bette, and the loss of everything that may have connected them again.

Jackie 1, is right, despair is the greater enemy. This is so sad to read and I just wanted Tina to hold her and tell her that she had not let them down. I can’t believe that the story is almost done, with so much more for them to do. Thanks for posting.
WOW as always I am in awe! if this part isn’t great then I’d like to see what you think is great! You’re writing hits a place in my heart that is familiar yet so far away from me now. This story is amazingly heart breaking. Your talent is incredible… As a writer to allow yourself to be put in this scary shocking sad world is an amazing feat! you’re beautiful! I’m sad to see it end but I hope that in the end Bette is able to see just a sliver of hope perhaps in the eyes of her daughter. you’re amazing thank you thank you thank you for sharing this story!
this heart breaking. i hope bette finally gets it! :)PPS
Hi,dear sweet Deean! Holy wow! This was quite the confrontation we expected, when Tina would face Bette. No doubt that Bette is not ready yet, because she is just coming out of the darkness where she had been for years. Her loud claim as a mother was completely comprehensive. Tina took that right away from Bette for the longest time. However, it is true that Bette would need baby steps to be in the safe place where she will be able to be part of her daughter’s life. The meeting was illustrating for the therapist. She got lots of clues and now knows where she should work further. As for Tina, we don’t think she should give up on trying to work things with Bette, although it is not going to be an easy task. As for Shane coming in again to the rescue, we are glad that Bette still relies on her. She has done a superb job with her. Thanks for this magnificent update, although it was very hard to read.
