The Newly Discovered SoCal Humminger Bette Porterius ~ Chapter 12

Tina had changed the first part a few hours after the agreement was made, and Eric was taking a taxi to the gallery.

Tina again glanced at the clock.  Cocktails started at 7, dinner at 8.  Eric had insisted that they arrive no earlier than 7:30.  That had been fine with Tina because Eric was habitually early.  Tina estimated that she would arrive at 7:15 and she was certain that Eric would be waiting outside for her.

    ~~

Tina was nervous, but she was certain that it was because the art world was outside of her comfort zone.

Her assistant Eileen had gotten a frosty reception when she had called the gallery to find out what artists would be dinner guests. Tina had heard her assistant weeping as she spoke to the gallery and somehow she extracted the information Tina needed.  As she drove, Tina wondered whether the crying was real.  She would have to reassess her opinion of Eileen if the crying had been a ruse.  That would demonstrate an impressive resourcefulness that Tina had never imagined Eileen could possess.

An intern had researched the three artists, one of whom she had met at the opening the week before, and had included two articles he had found about the Bette Porter Gallery. Tina had read the information and studied the photos.  She now laughed at herself as she drove, realizing that she had prepped for the dinner as she did for important meetings.  “The things I do for Eric,” she muttered into the cocoon of her car.

    ~~

“And now I’m praying for the end of time, to hurry up and arrive

Coz  if I gotta spend another minute with you, I don’t think that I can really survive.

I’ll never break my promise or forget my vow, but God only knows what I can do right now….”

Tina sang to the radio as she drove, as surprised that she was singing to Meatloaf as she was that she even knew the words.  She pressed the scan and her radio began to search for a station that wasn’t playing 1970s oldies. The switching stations became background noise as her mind traveled.

She smiled when thought about her trip to the strip club, something that she had not remembered until her conversation with Bronwyn.  Tina realized, as she thought back, that she had not been attracted to any of the naked and semi-naked women.  She found that realization calming.  “See, it’s just a girlcrush.”

    ~~

As Tina pulled up to gallery at 7:15, she spotted Eric exiting his cab and smirked at his predictability.  He waved as she exited her car. Tina walked the few steps that separated them.

    “You are beautiful.”

“And you are handsome and dashing.  I always love you in that suit.”

“That’s why I wore it today.”

As Eric wrapped his arms around Tina’s waist, she glanced around quickly before she wrapped her arms around his back.  They kissed for several moments and when they stopped, Eric whispered in Tina’s, “I can’t believe you look so gorgeous and sexy and I have to share you with a roomful of people.  I will be fighting men off all night.”

“Nine to one is nothing for you, shark attorney by day, superhero by night.”

“Ten to one,” Eric laughed as they released their hug. “You forgot about Bette.”

“Oooooh.  Bette Porter, the scaaaary lesbian,” Tina teased back, though she felt her stomach flip flop as she did.

    1. Tina, it is in very bad taste to be smooching and hugging Eric within potential view of Bette. I hope Bette didn’t see. She may over-react as usual and change the seating chart to have Tina sit at the opposite obscure end of the dinner table. Spumoni, please update soon. My heart is in my mouth.

    2. The things Tina does for Eric? When Eric wanted to bail on the dinner? Sure, Tina. Girlcrush, Eric… the moment of truth is coming, and Tina won’t have either of those excuses to hide behind soon. This, Spumoni, was a great chapter, and Tina and Bronwyn are a great example of why I love your stories. Now then. I can’t wait for the next round of “plodding” (why do you say that anyhow? I love the pace of this story!), so post soon. Thanks, Spumoni! :)

    3. Upon the long ago recommendation of a good and perspicacious friend, I began reading your wonderful “Humminger” story Saturday evening. I started at chapter 11…went quickly back to chapter 1…and could not stop reading! Your writing is lovely and compelling! Your story is wonderful! I feel blessed that you posted so soon after I just began reading your tale. Thank you for sharing your talent. I can’t wait for more!

    4. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! *waving* Ok, you have designated front seats for us, right? This is going to be interesting. We have been waiting to watch the dinner. Well, everything is settled, now. Tina has all the information she might need about the guests invited to the special dinner. Hmmm Wonder if Bette will be humming, as soon as Tina gets in. Oh, we are anticipating a whole show running around the one Bette Porter, when a certain blonde woman arrives. Oh, you are giving us lots of ideas for your next installment and yes, we are completely hooked, dear friend. *wink* PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks. – Lu & Marsh (Proud Salsa Aunties to the loving JC, Eunichick, ZLFAN, T_Daze, Melrose231 and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)

    5. Yes, Tina it may be a crush, but it is definitely more than a girlcrush, it just might be called love. Can hardly wait until they see one another. Goodbye Eric. Thanks for posting.

    6. Keep on plodding, Spumoni! I find myself sitting here mindlessly humming and waiting for dinner to begin. Look forward to the reveal of the place cards.

    7. Oh…be scared Eric…beeeeeeeee very scared! I’m really looking forward to your perspective of what T and B are thinking when they see each other again. More humming, please. :)

    8. LOL@Bette Porter, the scaaaaary lesbian. By the was Bronwyn is on my top five recurring non-L word characters in fics. She’s awesome. All sorts of awesome, actually. I wish Tina had had a Bronwyn in the show. And calling this plod, plod? You worry me, Italian pirate. Very much.
