The Newly Discovered SoCal Humminger Bette Porterius ~ Chapter 7

That was the thing that made Bette love Susannah, and even Hank, so much. Everyone else saw Bette, the hard-driving sophisticated cool gallery owner, free of emotional entanglements, and thought that that image was her totality.  Her father seemed to think so.  Sometimes even her sister did.  Susannah and Hank, though, saw more possibilities for Bette than she allowed herself. They thought of her as someone with a family someday and while she thought it unlikely, whenever she was with Susannah and Hank and saw their love, or saw ther entire clan together, she imagined herself in those roles, partner, parent, and it seemed a rational possibility.   “And I will tune out what you say, just like you tune out what I say.”

“I am starving for grownup talk.  Tell me all about the dinner.  Who’s coming?’

Bette went through the list with Susannah.

“Bette, who are the last two?”

“A small collector and his girlfriend. She’s a movie development exec.  Tina.”

    “You’ve never mentioned him before.”

“New client.  A lawyer.  Doing well, I hear.  I’m cultivating him.”

    “So who are they replacing?”

Bette laughed, “William and Anita Morse.”

“Damn.  Your new boy’s filling pretty big shoes.  He’d better do well and lots well pretty fast.  Maybe you can convince the movie exec girlfriend to collect, too.”

The conversation quickly moved to the artists and critics who would be at the dinner. As they began to make fun of each, Bette had the common sense to close her office door in case an unexpected visitor arrived at the gallery.

Susannah laughed, “I still don’t know if Will got fired from American Art Review or left on his own.”

“But Susannah, I thought everyone confided in you.”

“Because I am safely tucked away in suburbia.”

“Because you can keep a confidence.”

Susannah laughed, “You do get the irony, here.”

“I do, but maybe today was your once a year spill the beans day.”

    “It was last Monday.”

“Do you still think that Anya set it up so that Dimitri would run off with that art student?”

“Of course she did.  She was more interested in his art that in him.  This way, he feels guilty about leaving her so lets her continue to manage his career.  She gets the only part of him she ever cared for and he gets a twenty-two year old girlfriend.”

    1. Spumoni, your writing always amazes me. I loved the banter between Susannah and Bette…how witty was that reparte!!!! You write drama and humour equally well and I can’t wait for your next update.

    2. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! Ah, another brilliant chapter, full of laughter and other details. You are doing a terrific job at postponing B&T’s next encounter. The pacing is perfect. We believe the story has great potential. Thanks for sharing. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lu & Marsh (Proud Salsa Aunties to the loving JC, Eunichick, ZLFAN, T_Daze, Melrose231 and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)

    3. Susannah sees possibilities in Bette that Bette herself can’t. Bronwyn on the other hand, should be reminded about making assumptions. Her gaydar sucks.

    4. Bronwyn AND Susannah, what a treat! I wished they had had friends that did things other than hang out at the Planet all day waiting for them to drop by, and my wish was fully realized in FF, especially in your fics. Which reminds me, I was rereading some of these today (literally), and I think that I had skipped some last time I went through the Spumogan catalog because I hadn’t read your amazing Buddha story (is that finished somewhere?), and I had read part of the Halloween tale but not the whole thing. Anyway, I loved this post and your dedication to the story as shown by your willingness to post with your hurt wrist. Thank you!!!

    5. Sorry you hurt your wrists. :( Maybe time to give up boxing. Kidding. I really like how succint and conversational both Bette/Tina’s parallel universe’s run. You show the real sides of them with people who care about them. Very clever and sweet. OMG…an OC Republican joke (but oh, so true…as a So Cal gal, I laughed so hard, I spilled my drink.). Hugs to you Spumoni…I so love your stories! Thanks for sharing…now go take care of those wrists…RICE (rest-ice-compression and elevation)…of course a couple of Aleve is good too!

    6. My thumbs, they are up. I love the interactions with Bette and Tina’s respective friends, and there’s nary a scrap of evidence to support what you say about plodding. Just fine plotting. Sorry about your wrists. Rehabilitate, but still, post when you can, please. Thanks, Spumoni. :)

    7. Love Susannah, and i echo the sentiments of whoever said it’s so nice to see them have friends beyond the walls of the Planet! snorted at Bette’s observations on ‘slender volumes of poetry’ keep pecking.

    8. Love your stories, but I do believe you know my favorite one. When I get back from my little mini trip to Austin,Tx. Have a story to tell that is so funny. thanks
