The L Word Deconstructed: Season 1, Episode 3

July 30, 2014 By Jacky Leave a Comment

Later in the evening, as we get to Bette and Tina celebrating Marcus’s high sperm count.  Marcus’s has more of a pink to it while Sean’s (Episode 101/102, the previous 6 months of attempts) was more green-ish.  Syringe, diaphram, “magical juice” and some makin’ with the lovin’ between Bette and Tina, which leads to the insemination.  5 weeks later, the embryo inside will die (Episode 110).  That gives from Episode 103 to 110, 5 weeks of timeline taking place.  This…could get interesting.

Also, 5 weeks from tonight (Monday, February 16th, 2004) is Monday, March 22nd, 2004.  So when we get to that tragic moment, along with the Fae Buckley minions arriving outside Bette and Tina’s home at the end of Episode 110, it should be no later than maybe Friday, March 26th, 2004.

Alice’s apartment, where we now have The Chart database that she shows to Shane and Dana.  We now have first and last names for this version.  By the way, the time lapse also allows Dana to compete in the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam event of the tennis year.  It’s possible, both she and Harrison didn’t fare too well in Melbourne so they’re back to working on their game for a while before heading off to France for the French Open (the next Grand Slam, which also should take place just after Season 1).

And now, the names on The Chart as they appear on the screen.  It will zoom out so we’re going with pause advancement to make sure all the names are covered (at least the visible ones).  Shane refers to herself, almost self-mockingly as the “Center of the Universe.”

The following appear immediately on the screen, connected to Shane (listed as Shane McCutcheon).

Cassie Hunter
Brooke Krug
Alexandra Schreiner
Karen Jones
Julene Oliver
Tiffani Simons (last name revealed seconds later)
Renee Esplin
Shelley Rider
Tracy Moraga
Maryanne Winn
Sharon Price (paying off the suspected possible link from Alice’s Chart at the beginning of this episode)
Mandy Garret (Swimming Pool scene, Episode 101/102)
Lacey Haraway (yes, that Lacey)
Renee Moi (as in Renee from Episode 101/102, she’ll later appear briefly in Episode 108 during the yacht party)
Christy Briggs
Claudia Burton
Shelley Hill

Before advancing the screen a bit, some other observations.

Lacey is also connected to Mara Atwood (last name revealed seconds later), which is a name listed on The Chart Whiteboard.
Kaye Rich is not connected to Shane, but she is linked via Tiffani.
Brook Olivea is connected elsewhere (name blocked at first by Alice’s hair).
There appears to be someone named Ellen on the monitor, but the last name is unclear.
Claire Smith is not connected to Shane, but is linked to her via Mandy Garret.
So far, any link between Mandy and Lori (or Kerry) is not confirmed here, but still it is a likely scenario that something happened there between episodes as Lori will be single and looking to talk Shane later this episode.

Advancing the screen a bit now…

Shane’s hand covers up part of the monitor, but we’re still able to see that Tiffani’s last name is Simons.

So…more names.

Marina Ferrer (as in that Marina) is now somewhat visible on the screen, linked to Alexandra Schreiner, Shelley Rider, and…yes, Shane McCutcheon.  Unless this is an error, this is confirmation that Marina and Shane had a tryst that neither care to talk about.  This means another triangular link for Shane, between herself, Marina, and Alexandra.

There is an Ivan on the monitor, but the last name is unclear at this point.

Avery Tovell is linked to Mandy Garret.  Also linked to Mandy is Mary Cohen.

There is a Lisa, whose last name appears to be Ioja is linked to Shane.  This should be the other Lisa from the Whiteboard version of The Chart.  This Lisa is linked directly to Sabrina Lorde.

Sabrina Lorde is also connected to Shane, giving Shane yet another triangular link between herself, Sabrina, and the other Lisa.

Jessie Olson is on the monitor, but with no direct links.  That will probably change.

Bette’s name begins to emerge at the bottom left of the monitor.

Advancing the screen a bit more now…

Dylan Mayne is directly linked to Shane.  This is different from Dylan Moreland, who will arrive in Season 3.

Barbara Cook is connected to someone off screen to the North.

There is a Francesca, but her last name is lengthy, meaning it isn’t Francesca Wolff, who will make her first on-screen appearance in Episode 108.

Robin Mohr (not to be confused with the Robin that Jenny will date…whose last name is likely Howard) is directly linked to Shane.

Marian Hollis is connected to someone off screen to the East.

Advancing a little more…

On the screen now is the name, Gloria Kerrigan.  She appears linked to Shane And Alexandra Schreiner.

Katherine King is connected to Ivan (last name unsure) and Francesca, whose last name may be Thompson.

Carrie Pinard links straight to Shane.

Alexa Deros is on the screen, but the links are uncertain.

Arlene Delaney is connected to someone off screen to the South.

Also connected to that unknown person is Roslyn Reed.

Kelley Radman has off screen connections as one of her lines cuts across a name that is too blurry to figure out.

As Shane touches her name on the monitor (apparently a touch screen), her name and the names of many of her direct links begin to light up, including Marina.  This confirms that Shane and Marina had a moment at some point, but it is never mentioned beyond this.

Shane’s hand finally leaves the screen to reveal Victoria Ramsey, who is also directly connected to Shane.  There are other names that light up as well without the direct link to Shane, but those could be a simple error in the database that Alice will have to work on later.

As the names all go back to being white, Alice, in the search for Lara Perkins moves The Chart map East, revealing more names and connections.

Now on the screen we have Katherine Kim, who is linked to Bryce Miles (the same Bryce from the whiteboard version, no doubt).

Bryce is connected to Kathleen Roberts, who in turn is connected to Lisa Ioja.

Kathleen is also connected to Candy Angelou.

Carolyn Garrick (last name could be wrong) is linked to another name in the background.

Peggy Banta is now on the screen.

Peggy Sue, who is linked to Alice in the Random Act Marc scene, is now shown with the last name, Mohanty.

Also becoming visible is the name Careen Furano, who will turn out to be linked to Alice as her name finally pops up on the screen.

Alice Pieszecki (as in Alice) has her name now visible.  She is linked to Bette Porter, whose name is off screen at this point.  Alice has also finally linked herself with Gabby Deveaux, which will be pointed out momentarily.

Also on the screen is Cassie Hunter, who is linked to Peggy Sue Mohanty.

Nancy Carter’s name is visible, but linked to unseen names.

Other names appear on the screen, but are hard to decipher.

Nazila Hamid however is visible, having been linked to Shane already.

Other names now on the screen and linked directly to Alice are Sue Cyre and Donna Allen.

Just above Donna Allen is what may be the name Shauna Gines, who is connected to Nancy Carter, answering the question of at least 1 of those 2 links.

Also at this point, as the fourth wall looks over Alice’s shoulder, Dana Fairbanks (as in Dana, still in the closet) has her name partially visible in the Southeast corner.

Shane points out Gabby’s name, which leads to a closer view of the screen.

Jessie Olson is still on the screen with no links.  It is possible that she values her privacy, but not sure how to have her name deleted outright.  Seems like that would be a story in itself.

In between Peggy Banta and Careen Furano in the Northeast corner of this view is Samantha Onken, linked to Peggy Sue Mohanty.

Also linked to Peggy Sue is Eliona Zwirn.

Etienne Dubeau has a connection to both Careen Furano and Gabby Deveaux.

Alexa Deros now has more of a visible link to Alice.  Connected to Alexa is Maggie Hyatt.

Melanie Caplan’s name is on the screen, with her link to Nazila Hamid and what should be a link to Dana that should also make Dana very nervous, if not upset.

Alice makes mention of a name who may be on The Chart database somewhere, named Mary O’Reilly.  Mary dated a “lesbian pornstar.”  The “pornstar’s” name is unmentioned.

Alice uses a Macbook.  All L-Universe characters use Apple related products.

At this point, Lara Perkins is not on the database.  This means that her backstory (which is never really touched on) isn’t on the database yet either.  In Episode 312, it will be revealed that Lara, aside from the links to Dana and Alice will also be linked to Maryann and Claybourne.  This means Claybourne’s name hasn’t been added to the list yet, which adds more argument that Claybourne was looking to be real careful about sleeping around.  The Maryann in question would have to be different from the Maryanne Winn, if only because of the slight spelling difference as well as allowing Lara the possibility of a deeper backstory (which only FanFiction will be able to provide…assuming Ilene Chaiken doesn’t chime in…which she is welcome to do, by the way).

After all that, we get to the after-effects of Bette and Tina’s home insemination.  We also learn that the name of Bette and Tina’s unseen housekeeper is Sonya.  In Episode 101/102, it sounded more like “Sunny” who appears on The Chart whiteboard, connected to Bette.

Alice, Dana, and Shane arrive with Dana feeling embarrassed upon realizing what she and her friends have just interrupted.  Also, only Dana can have the kind of bad luck that involves being a lesbian, walking into a roomful of lesbians and winding up with semen on her clothes.  Granted, it could be worse (Episode 310).

This is where Dana’s tennis training place is acknowledged as a country club (by Shane).

The likeliest scenario is that Dana has been receiving this treatment from Lara for longer than just today.  Given the calculations of the timeline, the previous week was Valentine’s and perhaps Lara was trying to subtley woo her.  Better late than never.
