Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 7: Assumptions)

I rush out of the SUV as soon as we stop by the barn. Mrs. Davies was standing by Pearl’s stall and I gave her a hug.

“I am going to do all I can to help Pearl, ok Ellen.” I say sincerely.

She nods her head with tears in her eyes.

I move quickly into Pearl’s stall. It is not good. She is soaked in sweat from the pain. I can tell she has been rolling a lot trying to relieve the pain in her gut. I put on her halter and lead her out of the stall. She doesn’t want walk, but I know it has the potential to help her.

Ashley is holding her grandmother out side the barn when I walk out. Their resemblance is noticeable.

“Ashley can you lead Pearl around in a circle for me?” I ask. “I have to make an important phone call” I might as well have asked her to fly. I noticed the panicked look on her face.

“She is in a lot of pain Ashley. She won’t hurt you…I promise. It is vital she keeps walking and your grandma can’t hold the lead rope long enough.” I say handing her Pearl’s lead rope. She swallows hard and tentatively starts walking Pearl standing as far away from her as possible.

“That’s perfect Ashley. Thank you!” I say trying to give her encouragement.

I speed dial Kaylen’s number. It rings for awhile and she finally picks up.

“Christ Spencer! Do you know how early it is?” she says hoarsely. Unfortunately I had a very good idea how early it was.

“Kaylen this is important!” I say.

    She notices my tone.

“Are you ok? What’s up?” she quickly replies in a concerned voice.

“Listen, One of Mrs. Davies horses is colicing badly. I am positive it is a twist or impaction and I think she should go to the Clinic. Mrs. Davies’ let a 4-Her borrow her truck and trailer last week so we don’t have anything to haul Pearl in. I need you to take my truck and hook up an UCDavis trailer at the Vet school clinic. Also run in and pick up a bottle of injectable Banamine and bring that with you. I am going to call Dr. Blandau and let her know we are brining an emergency colic in.” I take a breath. “You got all that?”

    1. I like the fact that Ashley and Spencer’s meeting was a complete and utter failure, because the story can now grow into an impassioned hook-up in the very near future. – Awesome story! PMS

    2. Thanks for the posts everyone! McCoy123….are you snooping into my computer?! Hahhaha. I have this whole story written and yes there is an Ashley pov chapter very soon.
