“Yeah, no problem Spencer. I will hurry as fast as I can.”

Kaylen hangs up with out saying good-bye. I smile knowing I couldn’t have a better person helping me in a pressure situation.

I call Dr. Blandau and let her know the situation. She agrees with me that Pearl should come to the clinic based on the symptoms I describe and that she will meet me there.

I hang up the phone and look over at to see that Pearl is walking with her head resting on Ashley’s shoulder. The girl has a freaked out look on her face but is hanging tough.

I trot over to relieve Ashley before she looses it. I touch her arm gently. There is a jolt of energy between us. We both inhale sharply.

“Thanks Ashley I can take over.” I recover quickly.

“Uhg I have horse sweat on me.” is her reply. I roll my eyes.

“She just wanted some affection.” I tell her gently stroking Pearl’s neck. “She is in pain and scared.”

I can tell Ashley feels bad now. She walks over and gingerly gives Pearl a pat. I smile, very glad to see that this girl does have a good heart. All I have seen is her cool exterior…although the morning’s events really haven’t been conducive to her telling me her life’s story.

Mrs. Davies joins Ashley at Pearl’s side. She whispers in the mare’s ear and gives a kiss on her big cheek bone. The moment is sweet and it makes me want to cry.

“I should keep walking her Ellen.” I say gently. She lets go and returns to her bench seat with Ashley holding her hand to watch Pearl and I go in a circle. The time seems to drag by waiting for Kaylen to show up. I look at my watch as I see her pull in the drive with my truck. She made it here in 36 minutes…..she was flying.

Kaylen jumps out of my truck and rushes over to me with Banamine in hand. I give her a big hug.

“Kaylen you are awesome. Thank you so much”

“No problem. So how’s it going?” She asked. I just shake my head. There is too much to explain and I don’t have enough words.
