She’s Unresponsive Because Your Irresponsible – (Chapter: Five- Debate Exposes Doubt)
“Spencer!” Glen yells again after it what feels like an eternity. His voice is enough to break me from my hypnosis, and like a frightened rabbit that has decided it’s impression of a statue is not cutting it as a defense maneuver, I quickly turn and make a retreat into safety.
“I’m coming.” I reply halfway up the stairs, avoiding looking at Ashley’s house mostly because I can feel her eyes on me. It is a relief once I am inside, and it is comforting to get a feeling of safety within these four walls. It has been a long time since I’ve lived inside a true home. On the table, Glen has prepared a ever so complex meal of Mac & Cheese, complete with sodas and even paper towels.
“My, my Glen. Aren’t we the gourmet chef?” I tease with a grin as I take a seat at the table, reveling in the sound the noodles make as I stir them. Sort of a gooey crackle. The cheese sauce, if that is what you would call it, is that perfect texture of being thick without being chunky, and for a 10 minute meal I have to admit it looks pretty damn good.
“Hey, if you don’t want it, than more for me.” He speaks dejectedly, although he knows as well as I do Mac & Cheese is one of my top 5 favorite meals. It wouldn’t even surprise me if he made it just for that reason alone.
“Keep dreamin’ Glen.” I laugh just before taking a large bite, absorbing the comfort of a familiar taste. A few bites later I look up and notice he isn’t eating, just watching me with this odd expression, “Um… Can I help you?” I speak through a mouthful of noodle, arching a vaguely annoyed brow.
“Sorry I just…” He chuckles looking down at his food as he gives a little shrug, “I was really worried about you for a while there, and it is just good to have you here and know your safe. I am sure I sound like an over protective brother, but you know how I am.”
“Glen, you worry more than most mothers. I am fine.” Although I sound irritated, I am actually pretty touched. I am also wondering who took my brother and replaced him with this big softy. “…And thanks. It is nice to have someone care so much.” I add on after a moments thought before taking another bite of food.
“You know I just want what’s best for you, right?” He inquires, finally digging into the meal in front of him, choosing to look down at the orange substance instead of meet my gaze.
“Of course I do.” I give a little smile, deciding whoever took my old brother can keep him. I like the new version much more anyways.
“Just making sure…” Glen speaks with a little nod of his chin before proceeding to scarf down the remainder of his lunch. I finish a short while later, and as he carts the dirty bowls and silverware back into the kitchen he glances back at me, “You should talk to her.” He states in a matter-of-fact tone before disappearing into the kitchen.
I shake my head slightly, amused by his behavior although his persistence is getting frustrating. Maybe it’d be worth it to talk to her just to get him off my back. I do owe him after all, with all the stuff he has been doing for me, I ought to do this one thing for him. If it would make Glen happy, than perhaps I could give it a try. I doubt it will have the miraculous effects that he seems to believe it will have, but it’d be worth it. God damn him for being so damned persuasive. Or maybe it is just the Mac & Cheese working it’s warm, gooey magic. Either way, I think my mind is now made.
Utilizing my new found courage, I rise to my feet, strolling confidently into the kitchen, “I’ll do it Glen. I’ll talk to her.” I announce, my smile widening as I watch a satisfied grin spread across his face.
“Awesome! I’m proud of you Spence, doing this takes a lot of balls…” Boy, his articulacy sure is stunning. Nonetheless, I am bashful as I look to the floor, arms crossing over my waist.
“Whatever you say.” My enthusiasm and confidence are draining by the second. Dear Lord, what have I gotten myself into?
