Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 11: Fate)

“You know Cat Power?” she asked “I had you set for a country music kind.”

“Yes, I know who Cat Power is..You Are Free is a beautiful album.  And yes I do listen to a little country, blasphemy I know!  Music is integral to me.  I can use it to conjure any emotion I am feeling. So if I limit myself to one genre I would be missing so much.” I replied.

    She nodded impressed.

"Well put.  I will have you know that just because I live in LA and my dad is a hard rocker doesn’t mean I limit myself to just the pop or rock genres.” she said.

“You know I think that we have made a lot of assumptions about each other in the past couple of days.  How about we just start asking questions to get the real answers?” I suggested.

Ashley pulled into a visitor parking spot I pointed to at the clinic and turned off her car.  She turned in her seat and looked directly at me.  Uhh I could feel my brain going to mush.  Her eyes had me captivated and I wasn’t capable of forming any words or thinking of intellectual questions.  Thankfully Ashley could still talk because the silence was getting heavy.

“Sounds good, but how do we know that we are telling the truth and just not saying what the other person wants to hear?”  She asked still looking directly at me.

I felt like I had marbles and peanut butter in my mouth, but I managed to work out a response.

“Well Ms. Davies, I guess we are just going to have to trust each other.” I replied.

Our eyes were still locked.  The walls behind her brown ones were still up, but I saw cracks this time.  I wanted everything right now.  Fuck being patient I wanted the direct route this time.  I wanted to know everything about her and her to know everything about me instantly.  I didn’t want to tip toe around the fact that I was developing a major crush on this girl I had only known for 3 days.  I wanted my hands in her hair.  Her soft breath on my skin.  My lips on hers in a kiss that would never end.  Was I the only one feeling this way?  I needed to touch her, but I was too scared I might push her away just because I was impatient.  So I bailed.  I broke eye contact and got out of that Porsche in record time.  I sucked deep breaths of California air into my lungs to try and settle my unsettled nerves.  I heard Ashley’s door open and close.
