Becoming Dana Fairbanks Chapter 11
“Because, I don’t speak athlete. The last sports article I had to write was last year and the only reason it turned out to be any good was that you actually translated the rules into Alice friendly terms. Stupid editors wanting to do an all-sports edition of the paper… just wait until I am editor.”
“But that was tennis Al” Dana interrupted Alice’s rant. “This is boxing.”
“Sport talk is sport talk. Oh there is the guy I am supposed to talk to. I am going to go talk to him. I expect you to help me translate when I get back.”
With that the journalist was off, making her way through the weight room. Dana just shook her head at the sight of her friend next to all the exercise equipment. Alice looked so out of place.
Dana, rather than just standing there waiting for her friend return. She looked around trying to decide if she wanted to work with some free-weights until Alice was finished.
Her eyes landed on a speed bag along one side of the room, and decided to give it a whirl. Besides, if I am expected to translate for Alice, I should at least a little bit about the equipment these guys use.
Dana made her way over to the speed bag and got set. She tested it out giving it a hit with one fist, only to miss the second hit as the bag came back at a weird angle. She tried again with the same result. On her third try she got in four hits before she missed yet again.
“You need to hold your shoulders back and adjust your footing slightly,” a voice interrupted before her next attempt.
Dana turned to see a gentleman, about ten or fifteen years older than her dad, wearing a Bruins athletic department polo.
“Oh I was just playing around. I’ve never used this piece of equipment before. But it really works the shoulders.”
“That it does. You’re Fairbanks, right? From the tennis team? I’m Sam Bennett, I’m a trainer for the baseball team.”
Dana extended her hand in greeting saying, “Hi, I’m Dana. So if your focus primarily baseball?”

LMAO! ‘Now all i have to do is actually call her’ That was great, i’m really liking that Alice and Dana are on the friends level and Dana is getting more comfortable around her new friend while still managing to be her clumsy, cute self. Another excellent post A, thanks so much
Glad to see Jamie was there to help D figuring out what she wanted. D was true to her form when asking Lara to go out. lol. It was still early in the game. Therefore I wouldn’t mind D dating other people. It would be good for her. I am very happy that A & D were becoming good friends and were hanging out together. The coffee comment was funny too. Keep up your good work, anionayo. Thank you.
Dana asking Lara out is one of my favorite non-Danish moments on the show. The whole scene was funny and cute, but the “No problem” at the end is priceless. I’m happy for Dana, she needs some action, lol… Seriously, it’s only a date, it doesn’t have to turn into something more, right? …”I don’t speak athlete”… “The h-word. You know I hate that word”… LOL … Alice rocks!!! And so do you!!! Post soon!!!
Dress run phone call — too funny! The real call was perfect. You have a great handle on this young Dana. I love those touches you do with her. You are also doing an amazing job with the Alice/Dana interaction at this stage. Love Sam and how it shows how relaxed Dana is when she is in her element. Can’t wait to see what you have next! Thanks so much for this funny and sweet story!
