Russ had an idea.  “Hey Junior Julia.”

    “My name is Shane.”

“Hey Shane, when we finish cleaning up, we’ll go see the parade balloons being inflated:”

    “What balloons?”

“The ones in the Macy’s parade.  The one on TV with the balloons.  They inflate them the night before.”

    “Why would we do that?”

“Because it’s fun.  When you go home to Texas, you can tell everyone.”

“Let me leave a note for my mom.”

When Shane had left, Laurence asked, “You know that you aren’t well enough to do this.”

“What’s the point of all of this medicine if it takes away my joy?”

The three were soon in a cab headed northwest.

Helena was restless and her body’s time clock was out of kilter. She had watched TV for several hours and could not focus on a book.  She had already seen all of the videotaped movies they had and none merited a second viewing.  Helena considered seeing a movie and retrieved the New York Times from her mother’s office.  After scanning the movies, she realized that she was too restless to sit in a theater for 90 minutes.

Helena decided to buy some new movies. She called their driver.  As she was changing her clothes, she remembered something else she had seen in the paper.  She checked and saw that the balloons were being inflated for the Thanksgiving Day parade.  Helena thought it looked like fun.  She called the family’s security team and alerted them that she would be traveling on foot for a few hours.  The team’s leader confirmed that a bodyguard would be waiting with the driver within 15 minutes.

Alice had more fun watching the people’s gawking than she had watching the balloons themselves.  She would have tried to stand close to the workers, but she thought that she shouldn’t take the chance that karma made this her day for accidents.

“I don’t know who that one is, either,” Drew told Jenny, who sat on his shoulders so she could get a better look.

Father and daughter stared at the strange figure of what they thought was a rabbit.

    1. I will say again, you do families very well. I thank you for having Jenny confused by a spud, it’s so apt. A wonderful story Spumoni, and particularly nostalgic for me. I haven’t been able to return to NYC since I left over 3 years ago, and I’d lived there for over 20 years, 10 of the just a few doors east of Serendipty. My brother had had the apartment for years before me, so perhaps I wandered by and didn’t make note of Jenny or Dana. My brother had watched several friends go through what Russ was dealing with. An admirable work all together. I look forward to your next effort as I continue catch up on your older stories that I missed.

    2. Good job IceCream I can’t wait for part 4. This is just like a reminder of the last holiday and a gear up for the next. Perfect timing because we have time to enjoy it better than in the middle of a holiday rush. Thank you, Md

    3. “Fuck, Porter, Tina’s the top!” LMAO!! Still claiming this would be first place on my holiday ‘must see’ list if you could bring it to life on the big (or little) screen!!! You have seemlessly woven their lives together… awesome!!!

    4. Thank you thank you for a beautiful story and a lovely depiction of my old neighborhood on the upper west side. It was awesome seeing our beloved characters in some of my old haunts, and the convergence is just so…so heartwarming, thank you.
