Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Twenty Two, Part Three (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

After minutes of pussyfooting by the threshold like a coward, I managed to pull myself together and quash my anxious nerves. I take a brave step forward and step inside the mausoleum, the sound of my footsteps echoing and bouncing on the walls – adding extra chill factor.

I place the bouquet beside the vase filled with fresh flowers resting atop the niche. Jill must have been to this place this morning. The lavender-scented candle was still burning, filling the space with its relaxing aroma. Weird, I thought when I glanced at the object beside the purple candle. There was a glass there filled to the brim. I would’ve thought it was water had it not been for the piece of lime floating on top. I brought my face closer to the glass and sniffed, confirming my suspicions. It was alcohol. Gin and tonic by the looks and smell of it. I smile and shake my head.

So I guess Jill wasn’t the only one who visited this place this morning.

“You’re pretty popular today.” I tell Eric, speaking to his epitaph.

I take a deep breath, close my eyes and say a silent pray for the dead.

Tina opened myself up to a lot of things. Love. Guilt. Remorse. Emotions that I used to frown upon and label as “weak”. The moment I opened my heart to her was the same day I began to feel these emotions that I’ve always heard about but never allowed myself to experience. Tina kicked open the gates, and after that, all sorts of feelings seeped in and I was powerless to stop their influx.

    Guilt.

    Culpability.

I felt those the most whenever I thought of Eric in the past. They say that guilt is feeling culpable for offenses. And for three years, I allowed myself to feel a profound sense of shame and remorse. I’ve done a lot of things in the past – a lot of them I’m not proud of. Before I knew the truth yesterday, I blamed myself for Eric Walker’s death. He, along with countless others, was the victim of a cruel chain of events – a chain that was started by yours truly. It was painfully funny how my favorite high school past-time caused a massive series of reactions that resulted in a botched business deal and hundreds of fired employees. I bullied someone, and that someone’s family retaliated by stringing the PGC along and then dropping us like hot potatoes at the last minute of negotiations – giving us no other option but to cut our losses and fire hundreds of our employees.

    3. Alch, you really are a brilliant writer. The way you flip back and forth, moving from describing Bette’s inner most turmoil to humorous quips between Bette and Tina amazes me. I don’t know about pharmaceuticals, but you sure could have a career in writing! Fabulous updates…it will be a long wait for the next, but well worth it I’m sure.

    4. i get so excited when i see you have posted, i absolutely luv how you write bette/tina, i luv the way you play with their relationship. can’t wait for more!!

    5. Bette has a lot on her plate, she’s doing the right thing, and I have faith that Tina will be more understanding. Cause she’s Tina and she’s put up with so much. Take your time with the posts and thanks for the warning. Thanks Alchy.

    6. Okay, you mentioned youre not gonna be able to update in a few weeks. But we have long weekend in plain sight?! :D Im back to my little cocoon then, loving the sweet talks between Bette and Tina. But seems the drama isnt over yet from your little snippet Alchemy! Thanks for the update

    7. What a beautiful, heartbreaking, and full of surprise 3 chapters. All the agony that Bette put herself through and finding out that she was not the cause of Eric’s death. I like her idea of taking down the evil couple. Will she hire the ones that lose their jobs by taking down the evil couple, and will she have the ability to rehire those that lost their employment because of her actions of her childhood?
