    Labor of love (Alice and Tina have a secret rendezvous with Professor Kroll; Bette’s sister goes into labor)

    Professor Kroll looked at them and they replied in unison, “Three.”

    “Excellent.” The professor then circled number five on the board at the end of the equation and turned back to them, “Which brings us to the most important question. How many times we can travel through the portal?”

    Tina held her breath, hoping to hear the good news and Alice whispered, “How many?”

    “A total of five complete cycles. To simplify, I’ll use another mathematical sign for illustration. Number eight has often been considered to reflect the meaning of balance, infinity and is the part of Fibonacci sequence, 3 plus 5. Thus, to make the complete cycle or circle, if you will, number five has to be part of the equation.”

    Alice and Tina looked at each other, both relieved at the news. Even if the professor was way off with his numbers and predictions, there was a big chance that the portal will reopen one more time for Bette to come home.

    The professor continued, “Now, this is not a 100% guarantee because there are too many variables in the time travel theory. Based on my research and various calculations before I received your alarming revelation, the portal’s cycle was completed twice. It was reopened again around 1885 and stayed open until you decided to take upon yourself to mess with the nature and science.” The professor was getting agitated again. “You completed the third cycle and then went back and reopened the portal again.”

    Alice opened her mouth to speak but Tina quickly nudged her shoulder and shook her head. Professor Kroll looked at his watch and was going to say something else when they heard voices outside of the classroom. He began erasing the formulas on the board hastily, whispering to them, “No one can know about any of this, you hear me, young ladies? I’m going back to Portland to continue my research. Do not, under any circumstances, go near the portal.” He stared at Alice for a moment and added, “I repeat…do not go near the time portal. Until I can fully comprehend the consequences of your action, I need to find a way to seal it for the time being.”

    ~~~~~~~~
    Tina unlocked the front door to her house and sighed with relief as they went inside, “There’s no place like home. I’m exhausted and I need a drink.”
