    “What does it mean exactly?” Shane asked. “Well, the portal was first opened in the past and to complete the cycle, someone has to go back to close it.” “Wait, so if Bette went back, then she closed the portal and when she comes back, she will reopen it again?” Shane asked to clarify. “Yes,

    “What does it mean exactly?” Shane asked.

    “Well, the portal was first opened in the past and to complete the cycle, someone has to go back to close it.”

    “Wait, so if Bette went back, then she closed the portal and when she comes back, she will reopen it again?” Shane asked to clarify.

    “Yes, and, if the professor’s predictions are correct, it will be the last time someone can open it.”

    “Well, it’s good news then, right?” Kit said with a smile. “It means Bette is coming home, honey.”

    As they finished dinner and went back to the living room, Tina noticed her purse she dropped on the floor.

    “I totally forgot about the funeral article we’d found in the library,” Tina took the copy out of the purse, skimmed through and gasped, “Oh my God, it’s not Katie’s funeral. It’s Bette’s father.”

    Meanwhile, in another dimension

    Place: Orange County, CA
    Year: June 1886

    “Elizabeth, Elizabeth, where have you been?” Maxine ran down the stairs just as Bette walked inside. “Doctor Taylor thinks Katie is going into labor pretty soon. Mrs. Thompson just arrived. She’ll be helping with the final delivery.”

    “Mrs. Thompson?” Bette asked as she hurried up the stairs to Katie’s bedroom.

    “The midwife.”

    “Oh, good.” Upstairs, Katie was lying in bed, propped by the pillows and chatting with Christina. Mrs. Thompson was a small plump woman and as Bette stepped over the threshold, she just finished lighting the candles around the bedroom to have more light. Katie looked a little pale but otherwise she looked her usual cheerful self.

    She stopped talking when she saw Bette and smiled. “I’m glad you are here.”

    “Yes, me too. How are you feeling?”

    “Not too bad. I’ve been having a few contractions…” Katie suddenly squeezed Bette’s hand and cried, “Oh, one’s coming right now.” Bette held her breath as the pain shot through her arm, though revealing nothing to her sister.

    “They’ve been coming right along so shouldn’t be long,” the midwife smiled, gently wiping sweat on Katie’s forehead. The latest contraction passed and Katie lay back, resting her head on a pillow. A young servant girl brought a pot of tea and a tray of goodies into the room and everyone settled around the bed, talking quietly and drinking tea with little biscuits.

    3. Omg everyone’s coming back to write again I see. I have you on my list of authors to read I haven’t been able to read all your chapters yet but man I so wished I read them already as I am dying to reading this post it seems so intriguing. Yes you`re back iv missed this story so much please don’t leave it to long for the next chapter loved it and so pleased Katie came through the birth it so simple those times if only they new to wash you hands and sterilise the medical tools just how many mothers and babies could have been saved pps.

    7. When I saw this post I went back to Chapter 1 and have now read the whole story to date. I have thoroughly enjoyed such a different concept written with familiar characters with humour and drama.
