Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 27A
* * * * *
On the patio, Kit watched Marcus set up chairs. Just to watch him flex his muscles, she had him move the heavier double sized chaise longue from one side of the pool to the other, and back again when she said she wasn’t happy with the location. Kit set the table for a late lunch/early dinner, then walked to the grill to roll it across the wood planks of the deck.
“Hey, I’ll do that for you.” Marcus ran over and easily moved the grill.
“Marcus? I just wanted. . . I wanted to tell you that I’m sorry about what must have gone on at your place today. Tina’s mother told the police about you. I knew you didn’t have anything to do with that shit.”
“”S’okay.”
“Naw, it isn’t. I know how LAPD is. Was it bad?”
“No.” He grinned at her. “I’m a 6’3” black man. That’s generally the beginning of the description of half the suspects in LA. I’m used to dealing with the cops.”
“Really?”
“It was worse when I lived in Chicago especially winter time.”
“In the winter?”
He laughed. “Oh, yeah. The cops were always looking for someone who had robbed a liquor store, grabbed some woman’s purse, jumped the turnstile at the El and the description was always a tall Black man wearing a parka. Who doesn’t wear a parka in the middle of winter in Chicago? I’d be walking from my studio or class and four police cars would surround me, the cops would frisk me, and tell me I matched the description from their witness. It was crazy. I had to get the hell outta there.”
“But it’s better here, right?”
“I guess. There’s only a 50% chance I’ll get stopped. It’s either a tall black man or a short Chicano. And again, much worse when I was teaching an art class in South Central. It was all ‘pork and beans’ down there. Marcus used the slang phrase cops used to describe certain areas of South Central that were predominantly Black and Latino. “Anyway, what do they say, ‘what doesn’t kill you. . .?”
“Well, I’m sorry if I had anything to do with the latest shit. I gave them your card.”

I thought this story was over!! Never have I been more happily surprised than finding 84 pages…84pages!!… for me to read on vacation. I am presently doing a happy dance, Portia. Thanks so much! Take good care! Lin
Wow. This story is ALWAYS worth the wait. Love it.
I’ve just spent a very enjoyable time reading this. I’ve enjoyed every word, of this, every word. There’s so much in here, hope, joy, redemption, sadness, and of course the hotness… I loved it. Portia… I don’t know what else to say at this point but “Thank You.”
‘PortiaOnly’ – you are enshrined permanently on my favorite authors list… this tale you’re weaving contines to be amazing! Thanks for all your hard work linking the L-word past to your brand-new future, you’re the best!
“Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 27A”: Techie goes to her happy place. …Wait right here, Portia, while I go stock up on water, and provisions. I usually read these right through in one sitting. Your previous record was 57 pages. I think I’ll need a massaging chair pad. BRB…
Just when I thought this chapter couldn’t possibly get any better, we were treated to the wondrous, brilliantly orchestrated B&T scenes in the final 20-plus pages. “Tour de force” is a shopworn expression, but it perfectly describes “Laid Up”. Your dedication and the quality of your work continues to amaze. Thanks so much.
That may be the most romantic and erotic scene between B&T I have ever read. I loved Tina’s list of joys–I am in awe of your thoughtfulness and creativity. Try as I may, I couldn’t make myself feel bad for Stephanie. I do feel bad for Theresa–seeing your child in pain, even one as rotten as Stephanie, must be agony. It seems you have begun to wrap up a lot of storylines, but as a most-devoted fan, I am crossing my fingers you will be continuing this story for a long, long time :). Thank you for this amazing post–I’ll be counting the days until we see you again.
WOW 84 pages and i love every single page!! you hit every emotion and then some!!! so worth the wait!!! :)
Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I can’t think of the equivalent of being “speechless” for the written word, but whatever it is called, that is what I am. Thank you so very very much.

This has to be a record on so many levels…almost 2500 hits in 3days…Do you know how amazing you are as a writer, a storyteller…How lucky are the people in your life that get to call you friend, what a blessing you must be. As a loyal reader and fan I can only imagine. Please don’t ever stop writing, and in your spare time could you pls think about writing a B&T beginning. I loved your Bette coming out story. Portia you are brilliant, you leave me breathless with every chapter. Thankyou just never seems to be enough, thankyou!!!
Fucking Superb!!! Thats all I can say…A true testament of brilliance
99 pages and the bitch ain’t one! Doesn’t make sense but I wanted to use Jay Z’s line. I think the Nyquil that I am slugging down is doing weird things to my brain. Spectacular storytelling. You have this immense talent to weave together many story lines into this coherent overarching story just like life. Just a true pleasure to read and savor. It’s worth investing the time into reading and digesting this chapter. I hope you continue to bestow us with your amazing talent.
