Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 27A

“No problem.  If they hadn’t come, then I wouldn’t have known about Angelica.”  He paused.  Marcus wasn’t stupid.  He realized that Kit and Tina and Bette’s friends saw him as an outsider, a meddler, a person who really had no business in their lives.  “I would have wanted to know.”

He opened the barbecue and took the metal grill out.  Kit watched him scrape the grill bars with the scouring scraper.  The charred bits he scraped into the corner where there was a patch of soil.  She liked him, but she wasn’t sure that he had a place in her sister’s life as the so-called father of Bette and Tina’s child.  “So, your friend said you’re seeing someone in Brazil,” she said changing the subject.

“I thought I was.  I was even ready to get serious, but she called last night and it’s not that she’s not interested, I’m just too settled here and she travels the world with no interest whatsoever in putting down roots.”  He looked over at Kit.  “She did say that she’d love to spend some time with me when she comes to LA.  I believe I would be the guy in the LA port, as in a guy in every port.  That’s not my thing.  So, it’s over.”

    “Sorry to hear that.”

“Are you?  I’m not one to let moss grow under my feet.  I’m movin’ on.   And, I’m not a game player.  I have a few friends who don’t appreciate my bluntness, but life is too short to play games.”  He looked from his spot behind the barbecue, across the table, and directly into Kit’s eyes.  “Am I wrong or am I picking up something between us?”

Inside the house, in the kitchen, Alice was standing in front of the opened refrigerator looking for food for the impromptu party.  The kitchen radio was cranked and Alice was happily bouncing around to the Scissor Sisters’ Comfortably Numb.  Her phone jumped across the counter that separated the dining room from Bette and Tina’s kitchen and she rushed over to pick it up.  “Hello.”

    “Alice, it’s Helena.”

“Hey, did you hear the news?  They found Angelica.  They’re on their way home, with your Mom.”

    1. I thought this story was over!! Never have I been more happily surprised than finding 84 pages…84pages!!… for me to read on vacation. I am presently doing a happy dance, Portia. Thanks so much! Take good care! Lin

    2. I’ve just spent a very enjoyable time reading this. I’ve enjoyed every word, of this, every word. There’s so much in here, hope, joy, redemption, sadness, and of course the hotness… I loved it. Portia… I don’t know what else to say at this point but “Thank You.”

    3. ‘PortiaOnly’ – you are enshrined permanently on my favorite authors list… this tale you’re weaving contines to be amazing! Thanks for all your hard work linking the L-word past to your brand-new future, you’re the best!

    4. “Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 27A”: Techie goes to her happy place. …Wait right here, Portia, while I go stock up on water, and provisions. I usually read these right through in one sitting. Your previous record was 57 pages. I think I’ll need a massaging chair pad. BRB…

    5. Just when I thought this chapter couldn’t possibly get any better, we were treated to the wondrous, brilliantly orchestrated B&T scenes in the final 20-plus pages. “Tour de force” is a shopworn expression, but it perfectly describes “Laid Up”. Your dedication and the quality of your work continues to amaze. Thanks so much.

    6. That may be the most romantic and erotic scene between B&T I have ever read. I loved Tina’s list of joys–I am in awe of your thoughtfulness and creativity. Try as I may, I couldn’t make myself feel bad for Stephanie. I do feel bad for Theresa–seeing your child in pain, even one as rotten as Stephanie, must be agony. It seems you have begun to wrap up a lot of storylines, but as a most-devoted fan, I am crossing my fingers you will be continuing this story for a long, long time :). Thank you for this amazing post–I’ll be counting the days until we see you again.

    7. Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I can’t think of the equivalent of being “speechless” for the written word, but whatever it is called, that is what I am. Thank you so very very much.

    8. This has to be a record on so many levels…almost 2500 hits in 3days…Do you know how amazing you are as a writer, a storyteller…How lucky are the people in your life that get to call you friend, what a blessing you must be. As a loyal reader and fan I can only imagine. Please don’t ever stop writing, and in your spare time could you pls think about writing a B&T beginning. I loved your Bette coming out story. Portia you are brilliant, you leave me breathless with every chapter. Thankyou just never seems to be enough, thankyou!!!

    9. 99 pages and the bitch ain’t one! Doesn’t make sense but I wanted to use Jay Z’s line. I think the Nyquil that I am slugging down is doing weird things to my brain. Spectacular storytelling. You have this immense talent to weave together many story lines into this coherent overarching story just like life. Just a true pleasure to read and savor. It’s worth investing the time into reading and digesting this chapter. I hope you continue to bestow us with your amazing talent.
